Terrence Jones led Jefferson of Portland to a 42-39 victory over Joshua Smith's Kentwood team Tuesday night in the nationally televised Old Spice High School Basketball Showcase at Kentwood High School. Both 6-foot-9 seniors are nationally ranked recruits by ESPNU, with Smith at No. 11 overall and Jones at No. 13. And each showed why in flashes. With lights glaring and Kentwood fans blaring, Jones put together 20 points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals for the Democrats (14-3, with one loss by forfeit due to weather). Jefferson is the only team to beat Federal Way — rated 24th in the country — this season. The UCLA-bound Smith, still working to get into shape after missing 10 games with a partially torn patellar tendon in his right knee, made his impact on defense with 11 rebounds and nine blocks to go with a team-high nine points. Every once in a while, UCLA-bound Tyler Lamb of Santa Ana Mater Dei wishes he could help his future Bruins teammates right now. "I love how my senior year is going and how our team is playing," he said. "I don't mind waiting, but there's always the urge to go to college now." With UCLA Coach Ben Howland watching, Lamb scored 26 points to help top-ranked Mater Dei hold off Las Vegas Bishop Gorman, 82-76, Saturday night in the Nike Extravaganza at Mater Dei. Besides Lamb, Mater Dei (22-1) has two other guards headed to Pacific 10 Conference schools in Keala King (Arizona State) and Gary Franklin Jr. (California). King had 21 points and Franklin 17. Terrence Jones, 6-8 combo forward and one-time teammate of Ross’ during their underclassmen years at Jefferson, had Oklahoma head coach Jeff Capel watch him play this past week. Jones scored 20 points and had four rebounds, four assists and four steals in a 42-39 win over Kentwood (Kent, Wash.), who was led by UCLA signee Josh Smith. Trey Zeigler led Mount Pleasant to its eighth straight win with 33 points in a 67-49 victory over host Midland Dow. The Chargers pulled to within nine points in the third quarter but would get no closer. Mount Pleasant took a 22-5 lead after the opening quarter. MLive 2/2
Not since Glenn Robinson graduated from Roosevelt in 1991 has a player from Northwest Indiana been as celebrated. It's possible that Branden Dawson could have his choice of schools, depending on the results of his test scores. A "B" student, he takes the ACT in March. My job? To try to give some definition to just where Dawson might end up going to school. I know that Dawson hasn't made up his mind yet about who the winner is going to be in the sweepstakes for his services. But I figure that he must have an idea of who is in play and who isn't.... Dawson rattles off Purdue, Illinois, Indiana, Georgetown, UCLA, Michigan State, Minnesota, Kentucky and Marquette as his leaders. Post Tribune 2/5
History repeated itself Friday when the Oilers, led by Division I recruit Trey Zeigler, knocked off the Trojans for the first time in more than 10 years, 56-53, in a Saginaw Valley League boys basketball game at Saginaw High. "It's been a long time, but this is not a shock to us as coaches or players," Mount Pleasant coach Sam Taylor said. "We prepare for this ... to play and beat the best teams in the state." Zeigler, the 6-foot-5 guard, did his part, scoring 20 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Zeigler, the son of Central Michigan University coach Ernie Zeigler, did not commit in the fall and will wait until the spring signing period to pick a college program. The visiting Apaches went on a 16-0 run en route to an impressive 80-68 win that at the least will hop them over Hoover in the Southern California ratings....Although Hoover’s 6-9 junior Angelo Chol scored 21 points and collected 12 boards, the prolific shot-blocker finished with just two of his specialties.
