UCLA Opens With Win Over Carleton

The 3-time defending national collegiate basketball champions from Canada, the Carleton University Ravens, traveled to Westwood and were rudely treated by their neighbors south of the border.

In the first exhibition game of the 2005-06 UCLA basketball season, the Bruins soundly defeated the Ravens, 78-51.

Senior Cedric Bozeman made a triumphant return, after missing all of last year with a knee injury, pulling down 8 rebounds and running the break with his teammates like the good old days.

The fifth year senior started the game at small forward, and with Jordan Farmar still nursing a groin injury, moved over to the point guard for parts of the game.

The starting point guard, Darren Collison, scored 13 points and dished out 5 assists.

The Ravens had no answer for the speedy freshman who at one point during the game stole the ball from his opponent at half-court and in less than three quick strides dunked the ball - as the bigger than normal exhibition crowd of 5,144 at Pauley went wild.

Steady play at the post is expected from a Bruin team returning two 7-foot seniors in Michael Fey and Ryan Hollins.

Fey sat out the game with a groin injury and is not expected back for a couple of weeks.

Hollins started the game at center and had 14 points while taking advantage of a small Ravens team which did not suit up a player over 6'8.

Michael Roll, another member of a very talented Bruin freshman class, is being looked upon to provide long range scoring for this year's Bruin edition. Against Carleton, Roll hit on 2 or 4 from the 3-point line and finished with 10 points.

The Bruins next and last exhibition game is against Cal State Monterey on Thursday, November 10th at Pauley Pavilion.

Post Game Notes: Jordan Farmar has been practicing and should play in the next exhibition game. Michael Fey will most likely return by the first regular season game. Janou Rubin has been practicing with the team; however, he is not officially on the team roster. Rubin, a 6th year senior, earlier petitioned the NCAA for another year of eligibility since he missed the majority of games last year due to injury - a response from the NCAA is pending.
