The UCLA basketball program is down. There is no doubt about that. The program, however, isn't out. Present players like Malcolm Lee and Jerime Anderson need to step up and perform at the level that was expected of them coming out of high school. Frontcourt players like Reeves Nelson and Brandon Lane need to get healthy and stay healthy. I expect Tyler Lamb to come in as a freshman and be a valuable, versatile and reliable player. A big part of UCLA's success next year will hinge on center Josh Smith. The five-star prospect will need to come up big as a freshman for the Bruins. For starters, that means Smith needs to lose weight, get in better shape and play with a competitive edge. UCLA can't afford for their prize recruit to go the path of former highly touted center J'Mison Morgan. Jackets Online 5/14

The Wildcats are also pursuing Winchendon (Mass.) Prep wing Angel Nunez, Henderson (Nev.) Findlay Prep guard Nick Johnson, and Mesa High School guard Jahii Carson for that class as well. Book Richardson, key to the recruitment of Johnson and Nunez, reportedly will decide by tomorrow between staying at Arizona or becoming an assistant coach at Rutgers, according to Zagslog.com. Caught up with Gary Wallace junior Branden Dawson for a bit this weekend. Don't expect a commitment from him soon as he said he's most likely going to wait until the spring of his senior season. The schools he's considering: Georgetown, Indiana, Marquette, Michigan State, Purdue and UCLA. Indy Star 5/10
UCLA is expected to be on the short list of schools, as it was among the final schools the Wears considered before signing with North Carolina. Bruins Coach Ben Howland has two scholarships left to give. The Wears, 6-foot-10 forwards from Santa Ana Mater Dei, will have to sit out next season, but they have three years of eligibility remaining. Travis Wear averaged 3.5 points and 2.2 rebounds in 32 games with North Carolina last season. David Wear averaged 2.9 points and 1.7 rebounds, but missed the last five games with a hip injury. He has been undergoing rehab and should be at 100% in about a month, his father indicated. LA Times 5/11
But a deadline approaches, and it is May 19, the final day of the NCAA's regular signing period for basketball. Terrence Jones' mother, Linda Mashia-Jones, said, "I'm pretty sure it's one or the other," meaning Washington or Kentucky. Speaking late Monday night, Mashia-Jones said she was waiting for her son to come home. Efforts to reach Terrence Jones were unsuccessful. "I need to remind him that May 19 is next week," she said. Tick tock. Tick tock. Except here's the thing: Jones doesn't have to sign by May 19 to play college basketball next season. If you think Jones' recruiting story is bizarre now, there are a few possibilities on the horizon that could add stranger chapters to this tale. Once May 19 passes, Jones can no longer sign a letter of intent. But he can sign a financial aid agreement with a school, which can include a basketball scholarship. A financial aid agreement binds the school to the player, but the player is not obligated to the school. Oregon Live 5/11
"I want to address this with the Big Blue Nation one last time, I will be coaching at Kentucky next year," Calipari said on his Twitter feed. "Now let's finish what we started!" Now the speculation can shift from Calipari's future to that of Terrence Jones. A quick recap: Jones, a top-10 recruit from Portland's Jefferson High School, announced at an April 30 news conference that he would attend Washington. He made the announcement along with friend and teammate Terrence Ross, who signed a letter of intent to play for the Huskies. Jones, however, did not sign a letter of intent and since April 30 has said he is "committed to Washington" but not ready to sign anything. Enter Calipari. Jones said he called all the other coaches who recruited him after he made his announcement. But somehow the Calipari call stood out. While Jones denies that Calipari called him – he says it was the other way around – some suspect that Calipari continued to recruit Jones after he announced his decision to attend Washington. Calipari said, in so many words, that he would not recruit a player after he has announced a decision. Seattle PI 5/14
Where do you think the Wear brothers will land? Is UCLA the favorite? If so, what are your thoughts on the state of UCLA....The working assumption in the college basketball world is that David Wear and Travis Wear will end up at UCLA. The Wears chose North Carolina over UCLA coming out of high school. They are from the Los Angeles area, and most folks have them penciled in as future Bruins. http://georgiatech.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1084687Jackets Online 5/14

I hope Honeycutt is able to take it to the next level next year!
Wear bros will probably sign and then will push reeves and josh smith out of the rotation two years from now.
I heard that Coach Wooden is trying to land this Lew Alcinder kid. If we get him, we are going to be out of sight next basketball season!
No disrespect to the Wear kids (with no guarantee of them being Bruins as yet), but if anything I see Nelson being the pusher rather than the pushee. He proved as a freshman that even when undersized at times he's not afraid to dish it out...and do it again even after being hit and banged. Think Jake LaMotta in "Raging Bull."

I am not a fan of the Wear twins...
HEY MODERATOR...
HOW CAN YOU LET SOME OTHER GUY TAKE MY SCREEN NAME....NOBODY BLEEDS THE BLUE N GOLD LIKE I DO...
I was here first so I think there should be royalty fees...
He can be BruinFan#2
That's Lewis Alcindor, Mr Bailey
I'm skeptical about the Wear Brothers. Couldn't cut it at N.C. and now they want to come to UCLA and take playing time from real Bruins. Sounds kinda' diva'ish. I think we can go without them, but if we get them...whatever...
All this won't matter unless we get better gurad play. Why are Anderson and Lee still on the team? Another 14 win season next year.
Nelson is the only one who belongs in a Bruin uniform. Honeycutt is a finesse kid with no real ability to create his own shot.
Howland better learn how to play zone on both ends or his time should be up at Westwood. I hope we got rid of that trainer and have Josh Smith on a diet and workout regiment. The PAC 10 got a lot better with the incoming Frosh at all the schools except UCLA.
Th Wear Twins ... nothing special. They didnt blossom under a hall of fame coach; they will do nothing under Howland who lost control of is kids.
I agree.
If the Wear's were to come, that may cause Reeve's or Lane or both to transfer. Also, the Wear's play a similar style of game to Reeves/Lane, so I do not see the advantage other than providing depth.
If we get them...ok. That means Ucla can concentrate on recruiting wing players next year.
Otherwise, let's recruit players that want to come to Ucla and can provide a "different" look to their current lineup.
The way I look at it about the Wear Twins is that on the UNC Insiders they were discussing how the two were going to play big minutes and contribute. Then when the rumor started they they may leave, all UNCites started b*tching about how they are vital to the team and need to keep them.
Then once the decommit took place, the all bandwagoned and said the guys are overrated and would have rid the bench.
So my point is that if they are available I think we grab them. We then look to sign SF/SG/PG for next year, because my sources say both Lee and Honeycutt will test the NBA waters next year REGARDLESS of how they play out this year (ala Holiday).
I for one, think the Wears will be coachable under CBH and will stay the 3 years of eligibility. If they don't pan out, at least we can't say they didn't have a chance to thrive under the Bruin program (remember how well Mata developed by his final year)!
BruinFan, what's up with that? I did not think someone else could come on with the same user name either. So are you saying you have been impersonated recently?
I feel like somebody spilled the nachos on me man...how do I get a hold of the moderator??? I'm not a fan of the Wear twins...now you know what color my ball is lol
According to Scouts.com, the Wear brother's will transfer to Ucla and make their announcement "within the next week".
If Ucla also signs Remi Barry, who visited the campus this past Sunday and Monday, that leaves zippo scholarships for the 2010/2011 class.
Jammer,
Where do you get that Honneycutt can't get off his own shot?? I think he is the best player we have and is a taller Matt Barnes. I think he is great. I agree with you on the weight loss for Josh Smith but do think the wear twins would be great. Reeves is going no where. He is a stud and will always play at Ucla. I just think having the wear kids like the Lopez twins would be helpful just to change shots. Lane is not that sweet so I don't care if he leaves.
The Wear twins are white and I always bet on black. Don't pretend you didn't think it. Maybe they'll prove us wrong.
Thanks for the insight BB fan. My source is saying the same thing about the Wears. But wouldn't their scholarships only count for 2011/2012 since they have to sit out this year?
Regardless, again my source says Lee and Honeycutt will test the NBA waters at the season end in 2011 with the probability of signing w/an agent. That may leave 2 for the following season. Personally, would love to see Honeycutt stay for 2 more years.
Tell that to KLove's face Sharp(ton) tongued!
Nacho-Nacho Man, he's got to be a Nacho Man!
Testing the theory of the log in and what color ball comes up. This is Brew In running a test (not BruinFan)!
crusty, whiteys from the OC...boring, not a fan..oooh they provide "stability"
let's get some higher profile athletes...ones that can tomahawk lol
This is UCLA not Iowa, tell em to go pick corn
Nah...it's not even like that. I like a good good mix of farmboys and city slickers. Trust me, there are a lot of black farmboys too... Just not sure about these Wear Bros. Hey, we're hardcore fans, not animals...Eliminate that hate!
Remi Berry...your thoughts?
The Utube video I watched was nothing special.
Is he a 5 star plyr? Tell me about him.
He is a mystery. He did not play this season so there's not much info. But I've listed the positive things the internet had to say about him:
1) Nba skills per an Nba scout,
2) rated the 26th player by Espn before he was ruled ineligible to play,
3) CBH likes him, and
4) he is not related to Dragovic
His name is "Remi"?!...don't like him already. No respectable parents would name their boy Remi. Sounds like an SC kid.
Remi is French for, "I am not Dragovic so I cannot be any worse".
The Number 4) is the most critical one here!!!
Do you really want to hurt me....do you really want to make me cry.... :(
I am too soft to play in my homeland...I shave my legs, wear my socks to my knees to cover the lack of hair...they call me 'lack of man' on the playground
Ya... well you got plenty of dirt on the chin and chops to make up for the legs.
