Indiana Prep Star Commits to UCLA for 2010

By Bruin Basketball Report

Bloomington South high school prep star Matt Carlino has committed to UCLA for the 2010 class, his father, Mark Carlino told The Indy Star today.

The 6'3  guard did well enough on his prep tests to graduate a year early and attend UCLA this upcoming fall.

He  plays both the point and shooting guard positions. The lefty combo guard is solid at both positions and possesses a high basketball IQ.

“We’re glad that he feels good about it,” Mark Carlino said, “I think it probably helps that he’ll be close to his family in Phoenix. Everything has been a positive for us in Indiana, though. I know I’ll certainly miss it.”

Carlino had previously committed to Indiana before deciding to de-commit late last year.

He had visited UCLA last weekend, as well as a host of other Division I schools before choosing to play in Westwood next season.

Woot!!!!!!!! I knew Howland had to have some kind of ace in the hole after the McCallum and Ziegler thing blew up. Good for UCLA. This kid can play.

How will this play out?
P.G. Lee/Jones
S.G. Lamb/Carlino
or
P.G. Jones/Anderson
S.G. Lee/Carlino/Lamb
Please get rid of turnover prone Anderson. Also, what happens to buzzer beater Mustafa???
Another scholarship can open please!

Don't you mean Indiana?

Glad my source did not let me down with this info. Said Honeycutt showed him around campus last weekend! Good job Tyler!!! Nice to have some options and depth at PG. Maybe between Carlino, Jones, and Anderson we can take care of the ball this year (with Anderson as the 3rd option).
Bruinfan, I think I would like to see Lee switch back to the SG spot and share time with Lamb. Lee dribbles too upright for the PG position.
Okay Josh Smith if you are listening (reading, blogging, etc) get on the horn to your fellow Oregonian Terrence Jones and explain again to him on why he should join you in Westwood.
FYI - Jones makes his announcement this Friday! We are one of the five finalist but my source says we are in 4th or 5th. Come-on Josh, return the favor like KLove did for us in helping you pick Westwood and get Jones to hop on board!!!

Great signing Ben! This provides UCLA not only more depth in the backcourt, but it now allows Malcolm Lee and/or Tyler Lamb to play some back up minutes at SF to spell Tyler Honeycutt.

PG Jones/Anderson/Carlino

PF Nelson/Lane

Would still love to get Terrence Jones. We get Jones then this class is golden!

SG Lee/Carlino/Lamb
PG Jones/Carlino
Now WE NEED JONES FOR A BIG BODY...
I'm a much happier Bruin...Anderson in my books is THIRD on the depth chart...(no need to type the kids name)...It is officiall time for him to transfer. This move would NOT surprise me (or BruinNation) at all...Also, Mustafa is more solid and he is still an NAIA guard on the roster...but his work is appreciated...Open up another spot COACH BEN.H

Great pick-up for CBH! In your face U of A! Starting to feel it now. Could he pull a Reeves Nelson and work his way in the line-up early? Any reports on Stover and where his head is at right now?

We need 2 more bigs! T. Jones and ___
Stover went to a small high school in West LA. He played my old high school. There is no competition. For him to red-shirt means he's got no game. I'm concerned about our bigs. Hope the Cameroonians march in.....

Great news!! This southpaw can stroke the 3!! Looks like a smaller version of Manu Ginobili.
It's ok to dream a little!

Isn't he supposed to be a senior in high school next year? It will be interesting to see his maturity level. Looking forward to another lefty like Billy Knight though!

This kid looks like a solid, skilled complement to the current nucleus. A good get, it appears. Well done, Ben.

Scouts Grade: 93
May, 2009: Matt is a solid lefty combo guard. He is strong and skilled. He has the ability to play either guard spot equally well. He is a solid point guard because he has a great basketball IQ and is very effective running a team.

2 scholarships left...
What do YOU DO?
1) Kick off Anderson and politely excuse Mustafa
which now gives you 4...
2) Add 2 BIGS this year
2 scholarships left for next year

I think you guys are overlooking that cbh appreciates (treasures?) experience greatly. I think that the starting PG will be Anderson's for the losing. If he comes in healthy - who know? By conference play some of your predictions (I like DB's best) may well come true, though.

Mr. M, when you say that you think the PG spot is Anderson's to lose, I unequivocally disagree. If anything, last season showed Coach that Anderson is a liability as a number one ballhandler. All the experience in the world won't make a difference to BH if a kid turns the ball over and the team can't even run an offense as a result. Perhaps Anderson's best friend the past couple months and going forward will be a basketball, and his handles will improve. But last season showed his is a liability as a top-tier PG.

Thanks for the correction and paying attention. I should clarify that the two were Pump 'N Run team mates and not both from Oregon.
In this day and age, High School kids can become acquainted and rap with eachother when one is in New York and the other California. Sure different then when I was that age and you barely knew the name of the star players on the opposing HS teams. Heck something as great as talking about recruits on BBR was not even in someone's imagination yet!

If CBH can sign Terrence Jones it will turn his recruiting class around. Offer his friend a scholarship too as a package deal. Anderson will be replaced by L. Jones - he should transfer there are too many number 2 SGs coming in that are better.

BruinFan you should not be quite so hard on Mr M. He is just telling it like it will be. I will bet that CBH will start Anderson and Lee no matter how much another team mate outplays them in practice.
This will be one of CBH's youngest teams ever and Anderson and Lee are the only juniors and will have the authoritative role. Everyone else are SO or FR. You may not see a change at PG until Anderson f's up the first 2 or 3 games. Lee will also get the nod over Lamb even if Lamb shoots as well as Roll did this last year.
But I am with you my brotha that Anderson needs to take a PG crash course from Darren Collison, John Stockton, or someone like that, otherwise he needs to either "go" or "sit"! The turnovers by the entire team must STOP next year!!!

Guys, T minus 2 days. We get Terrence Jones then this 2010 class will rival any of BH's former recruiting classes.
PG Lazeric Jones
PG/SG Matt Carlino
SG Tyler Lamb
SF Terrence Jones
C Josh smith
Pray we get Jones! Its the difference between a great 2010 AAA class and simply a good 2010 class.

Don't jump on me but read the LA times article on the guy. http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-0428-matt-carlino-ucla-20100428,0,5826939.story He average 13 points a game last year. That is not very good for a toptier shooter. Just throwing it out there. Also don't want to be too negative(that is reserved for BruinFan), but there is NO way we are getting Jones. That is just the honest truth. Have read so much on him and don't think it is going to happen. Lastly, Andersen did have a few moments last year that were okay. He hit a BIG shot at Cal(I was there) even though he lost the ball at the end of the game and roll bailed him out. Don't get me wrong, he is not athletic and can't create anything for anyone, but his shot is not terrible. Think Lamb will be great and can't wait for him

wow don't check in for a couple of days and boom....
Watched the video on this guy. Reminds me of Reggie Miller. UCLA G/F from the 80s. Even does the foot kick on some shots.
Rivals has him ranked 122 in 2011
looks like jones and ross are committing to UW

All I know is that last year we recruited big name, big number players and they turn out to be crappy....I hope CBH looked at more than just hype and numbers with this incoming class...

According to ESPN, TJ will make his decision on Friday, April 30 (3:30 PT).
And it turns out Ucla is recruiting his teammate, Terrance Ross. His final choice of schools are practically the same as TJ's.
My hunch is that both will end up at Washington. where the Huskies are in need of a power and small forward.

At Apr 30, 2010, 3:30:00 AM, Anonymous Brew In said...

Ross already signed with them. My source says the Bruins will NOT be Terrence Jone's pick today, so I think we should be looking at which PF and C are still undecided for 2010.
If TJ surprises us, fantastic! But the realistic approach for CBH is to find at least one other big to assist our team. I'm not sure if Lane (when healthy) and Stover will be enough to spot mintues for Nelson, Honeycutt, and Smith...

Can't say for his protection but his research/results are usually pretty good. He told me the morning of that Carlino was a definite coming to Westwood.
But another thing I can tell you for sure, I personally talked with Kim Howland a few weeks ago and if we do not land Terrence Jones, it won't be because our lack of effort. We have been recruiting hard for this kid, much more than we did McCallum.

Terrence Jones commits to PAC-10 rival Washington.
We need to get another physical player for 2010 more than ever to help Smith and Nelson battle down low...
