Roll, Nelson, and Honeycutt Garner All-Pac-10 Honors

Senior guard Michael Roll was named to the All-Pac 10 First Team, Commissioner Larry Scott announced today.
Roll led his team in scoring with 13.5 points per game while shooting 46% from the field and 42% on three-pointers.
A fifth-year red-shirt senior, Roll had been primarily a role player at UCLA until this year when he was thrust into a leadership role on a very young Bruin squad.
Two UCLA newcomers were also named to the All- Pac 10 Freshmen Team.
Forwards Reeves Nelson and Tyler Honeycutt were honored as top frosh players in the league.
Nelson, who sat out the last four games of the season due to an eye injury, was a nice surprise for the Bruins by displaying a combination of grit and aggressiveness which was sorely lacking on the team.
Nelson averaged 11.0 points and 5.5 rebounds in 23.2 minutes per game this season.
Fellow frosh Tyler Honeycutt came back from a bevy of summer injuries to average 7.3 points and a team-high 6.7 rebounds a game.
The all-purpose forward also led the team in number of steals and blocked shots this season.
Nelson and Honeycutt are solid building blocks next year for a rebuilding UCLA basketball program.

On top of all this, I just wanna say I am proud of Collison. He is playing so well on a terrible team and it just goes to show how lucky we have been as Bruin fans to EVER get talent like that. We may be in an off year, but we have been damn lucky in the past and I firmly believe that an all-UCLA team would easily beat an all-North Carolina or Duke or whatever team in the NBA.
Here's to next year! (although I will be at staples at noon on thursday)
Speaking of former players. Did anyone see Earl Watson mixing it up with the Suns? Talk about a point guard with heart!! lol. Also Matt Barnes had a monster game against Lakers and really got into Kobe's head.
Good for Roll! He step up big time this year, all things considered.
Baron Davis, Matt Barnes, Jrue Holiday, Kevin Love, Earl Watson, Jason Kapono, Dan Gadzuric, Jordan Farmar, Aaron Afflalo, Darren Collison, Trevor Ariza, etc......Dayum!!!! McCallum, UCLA baby...UCLA.
Now get rid of Bobo and Anderson - 2 more spots for transfers...

All-time favorite Earl Watson. What a leader! Remember Ced Bozeman was going to make us forget about Earl? Always liked Matt Barnes game. Played with attitude and played a good high-post in Lavin's 1-4 motion offense. Thought Drew "I'm a quitter" Gordon would be a Barnes type player. Congrats to Michael and Frosh. Let's see what happens next...
Roll deserves the recognition for playing on one of the worst UCLA teams ever assembled.
The Frosh should take this as a step to elevate their game to the next level.
I loved Barnes when he played and he took Kobe right out of his game.
Collison is doing well under the tutelage of CP3 and Love is putting up Double Doubles on an awful team.
Ariza has won a championship and got greedy and went to Houston; but he can play with the best of them.
Let's hope Howland can recruit some of the unsigned biggies. He should get a jump on at least 65 teams.

NO BIGS??? We have no smalls. Man, if we had a guy Jerome Randle....dude, McCallum would be great addition but he is not the only PG out there...

There are two top point guards out there uncommitted but for some reason we are not recruiting them. Could be grades... could be desire... don't know..
If we add McCallum and Terrance Jones to next years class, I would be satisfied. That gives us two much needed bigs, two point guard options and a shooting guard. Add them to Hunnycutt and Nelson and we have a strong nucleus going forward. Lane and Moser need to beef up.
Lee needs to show up.
Experience will still be an issue but with a 10 player rotation conditioning can be mitigated.
Here is the issue. That leaves no scholarships for 2011. We want Chol, Dawson and Johnson in the 2011 pipeline.
Anderson, Stover and Morgan would have to transfer.
If that happens, we will still have 2 (Lee and Lazeric Jones) for 2012.
Thoughts anyone? Other Options?
I wonder how good L Jones is. Perhaps coach really need another guard at the time or he is very very capable. I am thinking you recruit Juco players because they either became really good or just filling a body otherwise if it is just another good but not spectacular player, might as well recruit another freshman.
Anderson, and Morgan might help their own career as well as Ucla and another school by transferring. I dont hold any grudge against them because it was a two way street on their recruitment and appreciate them choosing Ucla. They might however make a bigger impact for themselves and another team by going to a team like Long Beach State or other smaller program schools something where they can really get more playing time and learning.
If we dont get Terrence Jones, dont be surprised for coach to keep that scholarship open for 2011.
As they say, a bird in hand is worth two in the bush. If I were Howland, I would grab outstanding players if they are available, but only outstanding players. T. Jones would definitely qualify and McCallum probably too. Yes, it would be great if Anderson and perhaps one or two of the so far worthless bigs would transfer, but we can't count on that. If nobody transfers, I have "done the math" (but please check it) based on 13 permitted scholarships. If we stick with just Smith, L. Jones and Lamb coming in next year, and nobody leaves in the next few years, we would have 2 scholarship openings for 2011-2012, 3 scholarship openings for 2012-2013 (Lee, Morgan and Anderson having done their 4 years), and 5 scholarship openings for 2013-2014. If you use those 2 openings for 2010-2011 for T. Jones and McCallum, you would not have any scholarships open for 2011-12, but you would probably have a dang good team for the next few years - and some of the current players might transfer as many on this blog hope, and if Howland recruits some great players for the 2012 and 2013 classes we might not pay much for the donut hole in the 2011 recruiting class.

I remember when UCLA was known for it's big men...what the hell happen?! 6'9 is not a big man unless one can play above the rim.
Wow just watched the AZ game. Looks like Nelson unleashed 4 games worth of energy.
Dragovic usual bad shooting, but drew a lot of fouls and made free throws, grabbed some rebounds.
Only one turnover and 4 assists for Anderson.

Howland seems to favor 6' 9" guys with 8 foot (tic) wing spans.
