Players like Tyler Lamb and Josh Smith should be heading to Westwood with thoughts of returning this program back to the NCAA tournament and once again challenge for a Pac-10 and NCAA title. In order for that to happen, they need to commit to challenging themselves and not being complacent or buy into their stellar class ranking in high school because the division 1 level is a different beast. Joshua Smith got the chance to throw his arms up toward the ceiling in celebration one more time. However, instead of commemorating Kentwood's Class 4A state championship, he was cheering the really big ring he had just helped his teammates pick out. "Whoooo," he shouted after the Conquerors picked a design. When it came time to select their 2010 championship rings, Kentwood players wanted something that summed up their season. They wanted something with so much ice they would feel chills every time they put it on. They wanted something larger than life, as big as their 6-foot-9 senior center. The Monarchs did too much standing around on offense and shot poorly in a loss to Westchester of Los Angeles, 71-63, in the CIF Southern California Regionals Division 1 championship game at USC's Galen Center....Tyler Lamb was Mater Dei’s most-effective player. Lamb, a senior headed for UCLA, made 13 of his 22 shots for 32 points with 14 rebounds. OC Varsity 3/20

Country Day is led by Mr. Basketball candidate Ray McCallum, one of nation's top point guards who is trying to chose between Arizona, UCLA and the University of Florida. He is averaging 22.5 points, seven rebounds, six assists and three steals per game. MLive 3/17
Mt. Pleasant committed 22 turnovers while the Lumberjacks made few mistakes on their way to a 69-49 win over the Oilers at Bay City Central High School....The win for the Lumberjacks means a loss for the Oilers and the end of the career of senior Trey Zeigler, who led Mt. Pleasant to four district titles in his career. He finished Wednesday's game with 20 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Oilers. "I don't care who wins Mr. Basketball, he is the best player in the state of Michigan," Taylor said of Zeigler. "That kid will go on to have a great career in college and maybe even the NBA. Branden Dawson, the 6-6 do-it-all forward who many feel is a Purdue lean, scored 24 points and had 11 rebounds to lead Gary Wallace past Ft. Wayne Elmhurst 57-47. The win was the 10th straight for the Hornets, setting up a battle with Zeller and Washington for the state title next Saturday. Inside the Hall 3/20
Brandon Ashley had 13 points and 13 rebounds to lead Bishop O'Dowd of Oakland past Sacramento, 57-50, to win the NorCal Division III boys’ championship at Arco Arena Saturday. Sacramento’s Josiah Turner led all scorers with 20 points. Merced Sun Star 3/20

Josh Smith plays 4a? I hope he plays against some talent and that is not small schools competition with a bunch of short whities. I know he's an All-American but I hope he played against people, unlike Stover (Div 5 CIF small schools)...

If you think all the ballers come from the inner-city - you're an idiot. White or black, big or small, at UCLA we want people with heart and a competitive spirit. From experience, usually the smaller guys have the biggest heart and go all out...that's what we need right now at UCLA (a Jerome Randle type of player).
My concern is he's out in the boondocks, not having any competition and blowing up to 320lbs...only time will tell...watch your mouth buddy..stop here

We need terrance jones. That is as simple as I can put it. Give me Jones and next year is a legit team. Also if we can land McCallum who sounds like an earl watson esk guard it would be incredible. JUST GIVE US JONES THOUGH!!!! Time to pray to the basketball gods.

I heard some noise that Ben Howland is leaving UCLA for another program????Anybody????
He denied it. The rumor was Marquette. No way he would leave UCLA for Marquette. He said he plans to stay at UCLA until UCLA does not want him any more. Swami predicts: We will want him for a long, long time.
As a Bruin Fan and optimist...I would not be surprised if we made the NIT nxt yr...we lack a proven center, a Michael Roll type shooter, a proven point guard, a defensive stopper, ast. coaches who can recruit, a trainer who can prevent injuries...going to be an interesting off-season...CBH is definitely on the hot seat...If Moser and Stover see the court, that will just add to our youth...

The rumor was DePaul, not Marquette, and Coach Ben denied any interest whatsoever, in part stating that he would never leave UCLA and would stay as long as the school will have him. Good for you, Coach. UCLA would be a collective darn fool to even consider replacing Howland. For those of you wishy-washy types, you have such short memories. Three Final Fours in a row. If Holiday had remained with this team this year, it would have made a MAJOR difference playing him at the point and Lee at the two. Honeycutt's early-season injury hurt, and that bum Drew Gordon quitting on the team also had an effect. Don't blame Coach for this. I do think he learned a lot about this group, however, and that is their inability to play the type of defense he demands. You can bet he has a sour taste in his mouth that will translate to improvements going forward.
Marquette, Depaul, same difference. LOL. (BTW, I think you're right Windy.) In either case, neither is UCLA. Solid analysis Windy. Keeping my fingers crossed for the upcoming signings. Hoping in particular for Ray (or another surprise point guard), Zeigler and Jones.

Thanks. Appreciate your smart insight on this. I for one and still behind Howland, but the frustration locally I believe is that we keep recruiting finesse and we need to add some strength, some beef to our squad. We are also undersized. I have seen evidence (the NCAA Tourny) that there are a lot of tall, large, agile athletes out there. We need to land a few of those forthcoming.

As much as I hated Lavin when he coached UCLA, I have to give him props for always giving it up to the Bruins/Pac-10 on ESPN. Hope he gets another chance...now that he is older and wiser.

I don't see how we will be any better as of 3/29/10...No proven center, p.g. or outside shooter...the guys that didn't see the court last yr must have stunk....we still have the same ast. coaches and trainer....
A facts a fact...Howland is on my hot seat...I don't care how much talent he has brought in or any Holiday B.S. either...that chump would not be able to even pass the ball inside (as there is nobody to pass to)...so we would have won maybe a few more games with him...Oh and Bobo and Anderson NEED TO TRANSFER...
First of all congrats to Lav landing the job at St. Johns. Hopefully he has gained wisdom as an ESPN NCAA BB commentator.
Secondly, lets not forget there were a lot of disruptions with Drew Gordon situation, Holiday leaving early and all the injuries. They couldn't win for losing. While a lot of programs did more with less, those mid majors probably didn't have to deal with these aggravations. UCLA has the highest expectation in basketball in the country and I am sure Ben knew it when he signed on. But try not to be a bunch of pirates ready to make him walk the plank. Need I mention the freshman all star talent North Carolina had this year and where did they end up
I agree in previous years our players were in better condition. We need work on that for sure IE: Josh Smith needs to loose a few pounds before the start of the season. It appeared the players were out of breath all season long.
Howland definitely needs to change things up on both the offense and defense to be successful.
Lastly lets not forget Honeycutt, Nelson, a formidable presence, and Lee will be back and wiser but the pirates out there will accept nothing less than a championship. Take solace in our men's baseball team

I am not ready to have Ben walk the plank just yet. I know the consensus was teams like Cornell and Butler did more with less but those teams did not have to deal with early departures, disgruntled players and injuries like Howland. However, u r right his players need better conditioning. They seemed winded in every game this year and with the exception of Nelson were too light in the ass. But other teams did less with more such as North Carolina's all star freshman team this year so go figure.
Howland should consider changing up his offense and defense to compete. The offense was painful to watch as it was stagnant and shouldn't be afraid of switching from man to zone during a game
