Assistant Coach Donny Daniels Bids Farewell To UCLA

By Bruin Basketball Report

Long time UCLA assistant coach Donny Daniels has decided to leave UCLA and to accept an assistant coaching position at Gonzaga, UCLA Coach Ben Howland announced at a called press conference today.

Daniels replaces Leon Rice who last week was named the head coach at Boise State University after 11 seasons on Gonzaga coach Mark Few’s staff.

Hired seven seasons ago, Daniels joined the Bruins when Howland was hired in 2003 and helped put together recruiting classes that took the Bruins to three consecutive Final Four appearances.

"Donny did a terrific job for me and this program for seven years," Howland said. "He was a key impetus behind all the success we enjoyed. I wish him the very best. He is going to another outstanding program with good tradition and history."

Howland has not named a replacement and will likely wait until after this month's recruiting period.

Gene, where did yo hear this? The latest I have as of 10am today is: “Signing Day is April 14, so in the next couple of weeks, I'll make my decision,” McCallum said. “I'm going to sit down with my family and talk to them about it.”
One of those family members involved in that conversation will certainly have an unfair recruiting advantage, as McCallum's father, also named Ray, is the head coach at the University of Detroit.
“My dad's been my coach my whole life,” the younger McCallum said. “So, I'm definitely looking at (Detroit).”
“UCLA, Arizona, Florida and Detroit,” McCallum said of his final list.
Unless you can tell me otherwise, I will remain hopefull, even to the extent that he mentioned UCLA as the first team coming out of his mouth. i don't see Kansas anywhere in the equation...

Got me Gene!!! That is one joke that I'm glad it is just that. I must praise Josh Smith because I heard he called Ray to talk him into coming to Westwood to play together!
I have also heard from another local source that Ray is "leaning" in "our" direction!

In case Ray is reading:
Arizona = Hot ass weather. Skinheads. Hot ass weather.
Detroit = Daddy's little bitch
Florida = no academic cred, humid, thuggy peers, old farts everywhere, will want to punch coach in the face everyday.
UCLA = academics, hot chicks, shorts year-round, start rap album, Hollywood, legendary program, national recognition, father is far away but can easily visit, can become your own man...can go on forever! UCLA is the easy choice for someone like Ray.

My question is what has happened to UCLA Basketball? I could remember when UCLA could just about recruit any top player in the nation. Know they settle for semi-decent players who can't contribute to the calibur teams of the past. My suggestion is this: Ben Howland needs to recruit back east more and get some of the those hardcore basketball players who can play ball. Also Ben needs to recruit more heights for center. Ucla used to get 7-footers, not anymore. There is so much talent in this country that I just don't understand why Howland doesn't spread the wealth. If Ben would bring more talented height to his basketball squad and not settle for leftovers, than I could see UCLA at the top again. UCLA should be in the final four like Conneticut Women's basketball. Dominant, but very talented. Comon Ben, let's jump to it.

Most top players are looking to come to the college program for a year or two so they can jump to NBA. As such, they will usually go to a program that is more offense oriented to showcase their abilities to make that jump faster.
UCLA's past success of the last 5 years was mainly due to quite a few players who stayed longer and worked out hard or players were werent as heavily recruited who turned out to be gems.
Yes Klove and Holiday were top notch, but Love needed a slower pace program like ours to shine and Holiday wanted to stay close. Both were pretty much had their mind set for 1 and done already.
I love the Bruins, but we probably need a more free flow offense to entice the takeover players to come and showcase their talent.
Lets face is folks, the teams that won NCAA the last 15 years have been more offense oriented and still played decent defense. At the college level, players with great offense of skill and not as good defense gets away with it to a certain point due to a less parity and longer shot clock. Also zone defense as well.
