Honeycutt's Double-Double Leads UCLA To Win

Freshman Tyler Honeycutt had the best all-around game of his young collegiate career to help UCLA to a 65-56 victory over the visiting Oregon State Beavers.
Honeycutt recorded a double-double with a team-high 18 points and 10 rebounds. He also added 5 blocked shots, 3 steals, and numerous tipped balls to his resume in this game.
He stepped it up to help the Bruins compensate for a rash of injuries to their front line which includes injuries to James Keefe, Brendan Lane, and Reeves Nelson.
Keefe is out for the season with shoulder surgery, Lane is day-to-day with an injured ankle, while Nelson has not yet been cleared after undergoing laser eye surgery earlier this week.
UCLA played a short 7 man rotation in this game.
Sophomore guard Malcolm Lee snapped back on the offensive end with 13 points on 6 of 10 shooting. He also had just 2 turnovers.
In the first half, the Bruins efficiently picked apart the Beavers' 1-3-1 zone to jump out to 36-26 lead.
In the second half the Beavers' zone got more active as they pulled back into contention to trail the Bruins by just one with less than 4 minutes remaining.
But then UCLA' s defense solidified after a Honeycutt block and a Lee steal, the Bruins pushed the lead back to 7 after a Nikola Dragovic lay-up with less than a minute left in the game.
Dragovic finished with 14 points as he started at center for the Bruins, and did an adequate job in the middle of the defensive zone.
The Bruins shot 52.1% from the field while holding the Beavers to just 33.3%
UCLA now 13-14 (8-7) faces the Oregon Ducks on Saturday.

Not sure I would describe Dragovic as "adequate" that is giving him too much credit. I would have preferred to have Bobo start at center and just dump Drago for good. Sure he had a few helpful threes, but his defense is absolutely pathetic.
Now that we are not even a top 100 team, I am really starting to question Howland's ability to coach. I mean, if he tried a zone against florida a few years ago we could have won a championship.
What is with his insistence on starting euro thug and the turnover machine?
I watched the 2nd half...I would have preferred read the summary...turnover, turnover, turnover, Drago at Center gave up easy lay up after easy lay up, everybody missed free throws - one after another...That was PATHETIC...
We barely beat the Beavers
I know this forum seems to be for "Ultra Drago Bashing" but he did make some clutch shots and it will HIS free throws down the stretch that kept us ahead. I don't see any other Bruin making those foul shots at game end (or anytime), not even Roll because he never takes enough for consistency. Does everyone realize if Nelson could make his friggin' free throws he'd already be a 20pt player every game?!
"Toolbox" Honeycutt was a stud last night and stepped up big time. The entire team was poised and confident the first half, but the second half looked like the old, bad habit Bruins. Luckily we had enough to pull out the victory.
I cracked open a sixer for the team, AND then another sixer celebrating the Trojans losing their game against cellar-dweller Oregon!!!
I agree in part with Bruin4Life. 36 minutes 2 rebounds. I'm surprised it took the Beavers 10 minutes to find him. You can bet the ducks licking their chops. Let's give Morgan a chance. He can hardly do worse than Dragovic. Anderson had another sub par game but he seems to be slowly improving. Is Stover hurt?
Can Mike Moser be that bad?
Howland is still a good coach. His problem is in recruiting not coaching. We know the story. The good ones leave or get hurt. 2006 (Westbrook and Keefe) 2007 (Love and Stanback) 2 year gap. 2008 2 gone, 2 disappointments and Lee. 2009 2 hurt, 2 MIA and Honeycutt. 4 recruiting classes = 2 1/2 starters?
Can we kill the "Toolbox" reference...it's f'in lame. It's like totally not "a sexy pick."
If you look at how bad the Bruins free throw percentage is, you would probably asume that the low post guys are dragging down the percentage. But Lee and Anderson are really bad. If a shooting guard can't hit a 15 foot shot with no one guarding him how is he going to hit 3s? Incredible! By the way, Scout.com are a bunch of doofuses.
Hey, RNelson scores 11 pts per game. If he made every free throw he has attempted this season he would have 13 PPG. Your math is way off!!!
HAHAHAHAHA azbruin. Your post was the funniest thing I have read in a long time. FYI UCLA has 5 starters every game!!! All players that are currently on UCLA have been recruited by Howland. So your number crunching of 2 1/2 starters doesn't add up. How can we have only 2.5 starters???? We would have to forfit every game!!!!
