UCLA Out-played, Out-quicked, Out-hustled At Home by Arizona

By Bruin Basketball Report

Box Score

Championship banners ring the rafters at Pauley Pavilion.

Past and present Bruins take pride whenever they enter this venerable basketball shrine on the UCLA campus.

On this Saturday morning  no evidence of it could be found on either the court or arena as UCLA bowed to Arizona, 77-63, in a barely half-filled Pauley Pavilion and an even worse showing by the UCLA student section.

On the court, visiting teams used to despise playing against Ben Howland's UCLA teams in past years.

Opponents would complain about rough play, fatigue, nicks and bruises after two halves against UCLA's defense.  If you wanted to cut through the UCLA interior defense, you were certain to feel like a pinball as you would be sent careening by a few elbows and solid body checks.

This is true no more.  At least so far this season.

Arizona's Kyle Fogg scored a career-high 25 points and  Jamelle Horne added 17 as the Wildcats had their way both on the inside and outside against the Bruin defense as they easily sliced their way through the Bruins interior defense without a hint of resistance.

UCLA (6-8, 1-1) had no player who could stop Arizona's guards from dribble penetration nor prevent the Widlcats easy layups off flares or backdoor cuts, and although the Wildcats have no true center in its starting line-up, they easily manhandled the Bruins on the boards.

Arizona (7-7, 1-1) had 38 rebounds, 7 more than UCLA, including 12 off the offensive glass,  Wildcats' Derrick Williams, with his quick hops, resembled a human pogo stick as he grabbed 9 rebounds, and along with forward Jamelle Horne, out quicked the Bruin bigs to all the loose balls.

The Wildcats took the game right to UCLA's heart from the start and never looked back.  They were the more athletic team, the quicker team, and the aggressor.

Add it up, and you have game in which the Wildcats led by as much as 20 points - 15 at halftime, and then coasted to an easy victory over its meek rivals in Westwood.

UCLA shot dreadfully from the field, shooting under 21% and missing all seven of its three-point shots in the first half.  It was a combination of an aggressive Arizona defense, and quite simply poor shot selection by the Bruins.

Malcolm Lee and Michael Roll each scored 15 points while Nikola Dragovic resumed his poor outside shooting finishing with 11 points but 0-5 on three-pointers.

Reeves Nelson, the only Bruin this year who has shown any evidence of toughness on this team, was taken out early by the Wildcats when he had three early lay-ups easily blocked.  He never seemed to recover.

Jerime Anderson had 4 points in 25 minutes.  Anderson's lack of speed and playmaking ability at the point was prominent throughout the contest, even though his opponent Nic Wise was having an off game.  While Anderson did not have a horrible game, he did not contribute much to the overall effort either.

While the Wildcats scraped and hit its way to a well-deserved win, the Bruins barely punched back.

SOS call to Lorenzo Mata-Real or Alfred Aboya or Luc Richard Mbah a Moute.

There is a toughness factor lacking on this team.

We need some bruisers on this team. I remember Chase Budinger crying about how he was manhandled by UCLA in games. That is exactly the type of toughness we need from these Bruins. We needs more players other than Reeves Nelson to step up....
It should have been James Keefe but he has shown that he's just too soft.

I shut the game off. Instead, I watched the HBO documentary of the UCLA Dynasty. Coach please watch that again with your staff.
To get back to where we need to be...as a nationally ranked powerhouse,
Coach BH, please do the following:
1) Sign Ray M. We need another stud in our backcourt.
2) Dump Bobo, Lane, Stover and Moser (grab your sack and make 'em transfer) for Division 1 High School All-Americans,who are BIGS!!. Why - Bobo is clueless and has no hands....He couldn't dunk if he was wide open (see game tape), Lane and Stover went to small town high schools and played crap teams=no competition....Moser, well, if he doesn't play this year, why would he play next year...what r we waiting for?
As a frickin die-hard, I am going to find out who did this recruiting and pop their tires...A MAJOR overhaul with our bigs needs to be addressed...This year SUC is going to whoop-us by 40...Stephenson, Latvian guy, 2 other 6'10, 240lb big guys...hate to say it...
Who is with me? Get 1 more guard and do a major overhaul of our big guys!!
Signing off from San Diego...need some nachos and BEERS!
GO BRUINS!!
P.S> We'd still stink if Holiday came back...we have NO BIG GUYS...

I wish I could disagree more with BruinFan. All I can say is I still think Lane has a lot of potential. A year in the weight room could make a big difference.

I agree, Lane has potential and should be getting the minutes that Keefe is getting. Keefe has the "Deer in the Headlights" look every time he's on court.

Personally I don't think we can write Stover off yet. He hasn't played a game yet... so how can we decide how good he is? I will agree that Stover didn't play at a big high school, but I need to see him play before I agree with cutting him loose.
Lane has shown potential and good skills. But as mentioned earlier he needs to hit the weight room. Once he has a full year in a college weight program I see a good future for him.

No swag! These bluechippers forget that they are bluechippers. Malcolm Lee can be Jason Terry-like -knock down the dagger threes! Honeycutt can be Reggie Miller-like - piss more people off with their skills. The big guys need to harken to Bill Walton/Alcinder...UCLA was known for big men! WHERE IS THE SWAG! THIS IS UCLA dammit!

We have no quickness--little desire to block out--no direct plan to attack the basket. Derrick Williams has all of that! Why was he overlooked by Bruin recruitment? I hate to say it but if Drag is going to play-- zone it up, because he gives away points defensively! Roll and Lee should be the guards.

MAYBE IF NO ONE NOTICES, WE CAN BRING IN JOSH SMITH AND PUT HIM IN BOBO'S JERSEY AND ACTUALLY GET SOME TOUGHNESS OUTTA THAT UNIFORM.
BUT WAIT, SNEAKY STUFF LIKE THAT IS WAS SUC DOES. AT LEAST I HEARD THE OJ (SIMPSON) MAYO DEALINGS ARE COMING BACK TO HAUNT THE TROJANS. BUT LIKE BRUINFAN SAID, AND I HAVE BEEN SAYING FOR AWHILE NOW, IT WILL BE VEEEEEEERY DEPRESSING TO SEE SUC WHOOP US TWO TIMES IN THE SAME YEAR!

Since we are likely to keep some of these supposed blue chippers until their senior season, how about we get a real deal weight trainer and bulk up these mofo's. Man, we look weak. Malcolm Lee going to the NBA next year -yeah right, with those scrawny arms - make Jason Terry look like Ronnie Coleman.

When will anyone discuss Howland's lack of coaching. He hasn't been able to build on anything this year. No Zone offense and no zone defense. No weak side help once ball handler gets past his defender. Love is gone. The "bigs" need to swarm and deck some guys coming down the lane.
The year is lost; face the truth. Howland gets guys ranked 80-200 in recruiting reports. He is losing out to guys in the Pac 10. He cant compete with the powerhouses in basketball and has put the program back 4 years. Big 12, SEC, Big 10, ACC bottom feeders could topple any team in the PAC 10 this year.
Just like the man in charge of the football team has no clue; Howland is quickly becoming a joke. Out recruited and out coached.
Its a shame ... this team just doesn't care.
For Coach Wooden to be witnessing this is simply blasphemous.

C'mon Jammer, at least get your facts straight. Josh Smith is rated #19 overall by Rivals. Tyler Lamb is rated #41 overall. Lazeric Jones is apparently rated the number 1 JC point guard. We are also in the hunt for Trey Zeigler (Rivals #26 overall) and Terrence Jones (Rivals #13 overall). As for Howland's coaching: (1) What other coach has gotten so many teams into the Final 4 over so short a period of time? (2) His players generally improve over time, and although I will grant you that Keefe and Dragster have not improved much if at all can we blame Howland or those individuals? (3) What other university or coach has as many active players in the NBA today? Now, should we be playing more zone this year? Absolutely.

Point guard is key. Those little bastards have napolean complexes or something and just play damn harder. Other dime a dozen players feed off of that. In conclusion, just get an damn point guard!

Can't argue with the success regarding final four appearances, but let's get real. This team's top 5 players ... you pick them; can't compete with any top 50 team in the country right now.
Rivals ranking don't mean anything ... Bobo was supposed to be a relatively solid player. Lane and Honeycutt look lost out there. Love Nelson and he will be the next Luc Richard; the kid plays hard.
Your comment that his players generally improve over time ... if they are good, they leave early (Love, Holiday, Ariza);if they stay ...its a crap shoot. Collison is doing okay; but Holliday could have been better served as a Bruin. Josh Shipp ... what's he doing? UCLA should always have the talent to go 10 deep (UNC, Duke, Texas, Kansas, Purdue, Kentucky, Syracuse, Pittsburgh).
Never had a JUCO transfer; lets see if that pans out.
Im out in Michigan and the kid from DCDS is great point guard. If Howlad can land him, it will be a coup, but it might have to be Jones to run the point; it sure isnt going to get better if Anderson and Lee run the show.
They just look to be more of a finesse team; not in the same mold as Howland's Pitt teams or the ones that were solid blue collar guys: Mata, Love, Luc Richard, Barnes. These guys would rock you if you drove down the lane. Our guys just wait to get the ball out of the nets.
Cannot win without a point guard ... simple as that.
Roll has been great all year ... kid is class in every respect.

Solid comments Jammer. I hope we get McCallum.

Another bad loss at Stanford. Its not going to make the Bruins a favorite to land McCallum. Kid is made from the same mold as Battier (another DCDS graduate). He wants to go to a winning program and stay for at least a couple of years. He wont win in Westwood.
