Bruins Dominated At Home By Crosstown Rivals

By Bruin Basketball Report

Box Score

UCLA was run off its own floor this afternoon by USC, losing 67-46.  It was the biggest margin of victory by a Trojan team over a Bruin team since the 1940s.

USC's Dwight Lewis started off quickly and hit five 3-pointers on his way to 24 points.

The Bruins had no answer for Lewis nor did they have an answer to the Trojans overwhelming talent and athleticism.  USC was quicker to the ball, challenged every shot, and kept the Bruin shooters off balance all game long.

USC outshot UCLA 52% to 33.3% and outrebounded the Bruins 37-22.

Malcolm Lee and Michael Roll led the Bruins in scoring with 12 points apiece.

Senior Nikola Dragovic had a 0-5 shooting day after coming into the game hitting 52% from the field in Pac-10 conference games.

Despite being outplayed in every facet of the game, the Bruins were only down by 12 at halftime, 33-21.  But the Trojans kept up their aggressive play on both ends of the court in the second half squashing any hope for any Bruin comeback.

UCLA (7-10, 2-3) will next face Washington on Thursday night at Pauley Pavilion.

This is a tough loss to stomach...even in a bad year. I understand USC cheats, however, we have enough talent to compete with these guys. I am sad today.

If CBH cannot improve the state of the UCLA BBall team in a couple years to where he had it before then it may be time for a change. There is no way a coach of his caliber should be where he is at right now. There is something wrong. I don't see heart or hard work as it would have been translating to games.

Wow. What a disaster.
Can't understand how a team full of 4 star recruits can stink this bad.
Just as the team does not seem to care about playing, nor do I to watch such poor "play". Like them, I still show up, but must admit, my passion as a fan has taken a SERIOUS hit this year. While I would ONLY watch every game live - now a recorded game is fine. In fact, it is better. When the score starts to get out of hand in the first few mintues, I know then to check the final score and can save myself a ton of frustration and several otherwise wasted hours. Football, basketball... heck now even volleyball - we are gettin' worked over by $C. Ironically, we did better when $C was cheating. Now that they have been "caught" we can't do anything worthwhile. What's going on?

I am not surprised...heck at least we didn't lose by 40.
We don't have ANY big guys.
In my letter to Ben Howland I will address major changes need to be made. As I have said all along, we need to dump at least 3 players and recruit diaper dandies who are big guys...We're not getting to the Final Four for at least 3-4 years...
Where will our points come from next yr?
Jones, Lee, Reeves, Honeycutt, Nelson
10 points each...= 50/game
Fellas our program is in shambles....
BELIEVE IT

We have not had a proper center since George Zidek. Kevin Love was the closest thing we had to a decent big in recent years, but he is not a true center. I think strong bigs stay away from UCLA because they don't want to deal with Howland's defensive system.
Did anyone else see the Texas/Kansas State game yesterday? Those teams make Howland's squad look like a girls high school team.

Why is this a surprise to anyone. Good teams have talent, size, heart, a great poiint guard and pride. UCLA has none of these attibutes and right now, they have a coach who is obviously not getting through to his kids. This team will sink even lower before all is said and done.
Still sticking to my prediction of 10-12 wins.
Hold off on renovating Pauley ... they keep putting this rubbish on the court and real students will be paying more for tuition to pay for the suites while these "scholarship kids" should be held accountable.
Seems like no one has the "onions" to call out Ben Howland. He is getting out coached, and defintely out recruited. The guys coming in next year are not going to help. Josh Smith's injury is much more serious than they make out and Lamb and Jones wouldnt make another top 25 team in the nation as their 6-11 players.
Its happening in all the major sports in Westwood. It might be Water Polo U from now on .. certainly isn't bball, fball or vball.
Nothing srprises me. Feel sorry for Roll. Terrible way to end his career as a Bruin.
Stanbeck and Gordon are laughing at all of us right now.

interesting points Jammer...
Let's start a Ben Howland successor campaign...but first let me thank Howland for his time at UCLA. I'd like to buy his contract out...
Other fans may think that is harsh well let me tell you...In basketball your window of recruiting talent is limited...we have obviously missed the boat...we will not make a Final Four for at least 4 years...OC kids typically stink it up...also, Stover and Lane played crap teams in high school and need to transfer with Anderson. We need to get 3 big time, big guys....If Moser was so good, why doesnt he play? transfer! Reeves is under-sized and would be a bench player at UNC his first year...not the starting center...pathetic...
We are U-C-L-A!
There's 4 more roster spots right there fellas...Moser, Lane, Stover, Anderson
If we don't reload our team, I'm not posting!
Nachos?

BruinFan and Jammer: I hope you will have to eat some of those negative words some day. Unfortunately, I don't have a high level of hope right now. The Swami has been in mourning since Saturday at around 6:30 p.m. (well, actually since around 4:45 p.m., when the game was for all intents and purposes over).

All,
Everyone is going to hate me, but why is everyone dumping on Howland? This is the first bad season in 6 years. His first year didn't count because those weren't his boys, but he has been incredible since. Coach K, Calhoun, Roy Williams, Bayheim, etc ALL had one or two terrible years and they still are great coaches. Anyways this years team is terrible, but that doesn't mean we won't get better next. I think everyone should take a big breathe and support your bruins win lose or draw. It is SUPER frustrating that they are getting shelled by our rivals, but still think there is some talent there. Also people get better and you never know if Malcom Lee, Brendan Lane, Bobo, or even Andersen bodies mature and they get stronger. Remember Matt Barnes was terrible his first 2 years and then blossomed as a Senior. Also Honeycutt is an athlete and will be good next year. Go Bruins!

Ughhhh! The Condoms of all teams! I agree that Howland has to re-evaluate who he brings into Westwood. We need strength! The 6'1" 175 PGs, 6'5" 190 SGs, and 6'9" 200 forwards aren't cutting it.
While it is okay to have them with diversity, we need more poundage. Josh Smith is a step in the right direction, but physical teams beat the hell out of us. Oh the days of the Love/Mata bruise brothers seem like an eon ago now!
The Bruins poor season as made me limit my brews, but i have on the flipside increased my straight shots of the hard stuff. I like beer with my nachos...

We might score 40 a game next year...
lack of experience and NO BIGS...
I'll dump on Howland unless he dumps Stover, Lane and Anderson and gets some quality big guys...I bleed blue n gold...
SC will manhandle us this decade sh**

Anybody have any clue how it is decided what icon appears per each message posted here? Are they just random or is there something more to it? I don't get it... seems to take up unnecessary space.
Oh yeah, our team stinks this year, but GO BRUINS!

What type of team are the Bruins? They dont play tougn defense. They cant attack a zone. They can play man to man defense. They rely on the 3 ball and they don't run (they can't becuase they dont have too many stops).
They dont have any identity.
Syracuse has its 2-3 Zone and quick transition; inside outside game on the offensive end. Kentucky runs you off the court. Wisconsin and Kansas have constant movement and spacing. Texas plays tough D, Tennessee beats you with their athletes.
What do we hold up as UCLA basketball? Nothing.
This team has no identity; they look lost, stunned and humiliated. (they are taking on the personality of their coach ... at the moment). Howland needs to lead them out of this funk and build for the future or its going to be three straight years of angry and frustrated fans. They are not filling Pauley; one of the sacred temples of college basketball.
They have kissed off this season and it will be a long time to get them back in the tournament, let alone a final four.
I would love to eat my words (Swami), but this team needs to be broken up and let some of these guys go and bring in a new, fresh identity.
The kid from DCDS is not going to come to Westwood. He is one and done and he will not get the exposure at UCLA as he would at his other choices.
Recruit from outside of the state and get players who care about the program.
If Drags thinks he can play at the next level, he is absolutely wrong.
Roll is a class act. Sorry he has to put up with this garbage week end and week out.
Howland's got to make some key off season moves. He hasn't made any good in season ones on or off the court.
He's here to stay ... for good or for bad.
