Joshua Smith, Kentwood's UCLA-bound center, scored 10 points in the Conquerors' 61-37 boys basketball victory over Tahoma Tuesday night — his first game since being injured last month. Smith, a 6-foot-10 senior ranked No. 1 in the nation at his position by some recruiting services coming into the season, played for the first time since Dec. 8. Smith sufferred a partially torn patellar tendon in the Conquerors' second game of the season, a loss to top-ranked Federal Way. Seattle Times 1/12

John A. Logan handed the Olney Central College Blue Knights a 68-57 loss Wednesday night in Carterville.  UCLA-bound point guard Lazeric Jones scored 14 points for the Volunteers, who improved to 12-4 overall and 3-0 in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference. Olney Daily Mail 1/14

Josh Smith will not be in the lineup tomorrow when Kentwood plays Kinston High School (N.C.) in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame's Spalding Hoophall Classic in Springfield, Mass. Smith, a 6-foot-10 senior who has signed with UCLA, returned to action last Tuesday after suffering a partially torn patellar tendon earlier in the season. He scored 10 points in limited action as the Conquerors beat Tahoma. According to Jo Anne Daughtry, Kentwood athletic director, Smith collided with a Tahoma player during Tuesday's game and was held out of last night's game against Kent-Meridian for precautionary purposes. She said it was the family's decision for him not to play tomorrow, not wanting to risk further injury in a non-conference contest. Seattle Times 1/15

After Friday night's 84-47 Trinity League victory at JSerra, McKnight tied former St. Joseph of Alameda and Bishop O'Dowd of Oakland coach Mike Phelps for the state record with 843 career victories....Mater Dei's Tyler Lamb, who finished with six points, seven rebounds and 11 assists, helped change the tempo early in the run by throwing down a lob pass from Tommy Stangl. OC Varsity 1/15

Recruits

Sac High guard Josiah Turner scored 34 points, but Oakland wing Jabari Brown had 33 as the Wildcats won 88-81. Sac Bee 1/11

First, high-profile recruit Terrence Jones had hoped to finish dancing with prospective colleges before the season and sign a letter of intent in November. Then once the season started, the Democrats were intent on making a run at becoming one of the country's best teams.  Neither came together as planned.  The 6-foot-8 Jones remains as hot as ever, No. 15 in the ESPNU 100 rankings for the class of 2010. But Jones opted not to sign early, instead putting his recruiting on pause to concentrate on the season.  Jefferson coach Pat Strickland said Jones' list of prospective colleges hasn't changed. It's down to five: Kentucky, Oklahoma, Washington, Oregon and UCLA. Jones has visited all but Oregon, where he has taken an unofficial visit. Strickland said when he and Jones talk these days, it's all about Democrats basketball, not what he's thinking about college.  Oregon Live 1/13

In what has been an area rivalry for a long time now, the host Oilers disposed of upset-minded Alma Tuesday night despite a slow start as it rolled the rest of the way for a 69-40 victory....Trey Zeigler led a balanced Mt. Pleasant attack with 15 points to go along with six rebounds, while Josh Rathje and James Arnold scored 10 points apiece. Morning Sun 1/13

Milton: Defeated Chaminade (St. Louis), 78-57: Julian Royal, 6-8 junior center. Royal, who is ranked No. 30 in the Class of 2011, scored 20 points on 10-of-13 shooting last night. He also grabbed three rebounds and blocked two shots. News Ledger 1/15

Milton: Defeated Christ the King (Middle Village, N.Y.), 66-53: Julian Royal, 6-foot-8 junior forward. Royal, who is ranked by Rivals.com as the No. 30 player in the Class of 2011, scored 21 points, grabbed six rebounds and blocked two shots last night. News Ledger 1/16

The Irish led 46-42 at the moment of Thomas' timeout. Notre Dame's half-court offense was fundamental and frustrating to Times No. 6 Wallace. And the Hornets had no answer for 6-foot-8 junior Max Bielfeldt. Thomas pulled Wallace junior Branden Dawson to his side and said: "This is our show. Let's go." After the timeout, Dawson responded by nailing a 3-pointer from the corner. And in the next 44 seconds the 6-6 Dawson had two thunderous slam dunks. Wallace prevailed 82-70 over the Irish (11-6). NWI Times 1/17

Fellas, I hope our starting center nxt yr is not a 3 star recruit. Combine Howland's staff w/ the lack of recruiting accuracy the past few years and I need to go to church.
Coach, I hope Josh is playing against top notch talent and rippin it up. In my book, you are on the hot seat if you don't do some drastic changes and get some studs!
Josh, welcome to the Bruin family....we all are hoping you continue to do well your Senior season. If your knee hurts - rest it please.
GO BRUINS!!!!!

BruinFan, no disrespect intended, but you have a short memory. I think Howland has already entrenched himself at UCLA with his success. True, ultimate success with UCLA Basketball means hoisting a banner, but you can hardly point a finger during a season of rebuilding. It's not just losing talent to the NBA -- including Holiday who could have been a star in college this year but is sputtering along and regressing in the pros -- it's having injuries and a defection in the head case Gordon. Nelson has been a pleasant surprise, and Honeycutt shows flashes after being injured that he could be pretty darn good...but not THAT good to leave school. Seeing a soft defense is what kills me after becoming accustomed to fierce pressure both on the perimeter and in post double teams. Imagine how Howland feels having to go zone. I miss the defense aggression of Afflalo, Aboya, Luc Richard and breakouts with Collison and others as a result of those forced turnovers. When you play defense, you have a chance to win every night. I hope we see guys like that come in who not only can play it but WANT to play it!

I think at this point...Spencer Soo should get a crack at the starting line up. Something tells me he has heart despite his size!

The speed at which fans have turned on Howland astounds me. BruinFan, it was only a few years ago we were celebrating Final Fours and talking of hanging that next banner. I agree with Windycityds that this has been a perfect storm of problems. The upside with this group is that they'll stay and get better. The one real knock I have with Howland (and I had back in the Final Four runs) is that none of the recruits (except DC) want to stay that extra year and many leave after their Sophomore year, so the team never builds any real chemistry from year to year. Would UNC have won the championship last year if the two Tylers hadn't stuck around for another year? Not a chance. I'm a believer in BenBall and I know this group will get better, but my worry has always been that kids don't really enjoy playing his system, no matter how successful it's been shown to be. Especially recruiting mainly from the West Coast. I'm hardly saying we need to find Ben's replacement, I'm just saying finding the right mix of recruits might be tougher than first thought for his style.
But, it will take more than one year like this for me to give up on him. Show loyalty to the man you lauded just a couple of years ago as the savior of UCLA basketball.

Totally agree with BleedBlueandGold.
Don't throw Howland under the bus quite yet. He has been incredible for the last 6 years and NO team has lost more 1st round draft pics in the last 10 years than Ucla. It is amazing the talent we have had. Agreed too that the defense is what boggles my mind because there shouldn't any excuse talented or not you can still play tough defense. Howland is a warrior though and trust him completely. He has earned that trust with outstanding seasons and 3 final fours.

We might score 40 points a game next yr.
We will be inexperienced and still have NO BIGS...
wake up people...I bleed blue and gold

Well we are actually baby blue and yellow, so not sure if you are talking about Cal or Ucla. Anyways don't totally agree with you. Stover 6-10, Morgan 6-10, Lane 6-9, Smith 6-10, Reeves 6'8 and a huge guard in Honeycutt 6'7. That will be the biggest front line in the Pac-10. We are just not very good right now, but try to be a little more positive. We might not be incredible but saying 40 points a game is ridiculous.

Anybody have any clue how it is decided what icon appears per each message posted here? Are they just random or is there something more to it? I don't get it... seems to take up unnecessary space.
Oh yeah, our team stinks this year, but GO BRUINS!

With all due respect. Leaving early for the NBA is just a part of the business that is college basketball. The talent BH is getting to Westwood is simply not as good as ACC,Big East, Big 12 top ranked schools. None of these guys could start on any upper ehelont teams in these conferences.
Stop living in the past about three straight final fours. We were never in the top four during those years despite the success in the NCAA tournament. We were hosewhipped in all three final fours.
Point Guard play is so crucial and we don't have a stud running this team. We have Lee and Anderson who would not make any team in the other top flight conferences.
What's upsetting about this team is that their defense is so soft and opposing teams run a layup and dunk drill right through them every game. They will have to win with good team defense and they simply dont have it.
They also lack quickness and athleticism and it is showing up against all theior opponents except Butler who simply beat them with a goo disciplined team.
Howland has lost this team and they do not play hard for him. The UCLA in the front of the jerseys doesn't intimidate anyone anymore. A good hard foul on a guy ready to posertize you would send the message.
Funny how the pupil at Pitt is surpassing the master.
At some point, Ben Howland needs to be held accountable for this team at this time.
Stop living in the past.

Jammer,
Agree with you on the defense end. There really isn't any excuse, but getting whipped in the championship game, then in the two other final four games less than 2 years ago is a problem many teams would like to have. Ben howland is a good coach and you are being pretty fair weather. One bad season and you throw in the towel. What was our recruiting class ranked in 08? 1st by every report. Jrue Holiday hurt and we lost our top 3 players, plus Drew Gordon who was a big part of that recruiting class. Bobo is a flop, but don't blame that on Howland. Last years recruits were a top 10 class and it was the first time we haven't been in the top 5 in 4 years. So just take it easy and stop being so fairweathered.

NorCal:
"Last year recruits were a top ten class" that have not done anything for this team. Take a look at Frosh and Sophomore classes for the elite teams and see how they are contributing to their team right now in meaningful ways. Not throwing in the towel, but we are not in the top 70 teams in the nation. Accept it. Deal with it.Correct it.
Ask why Howland and Gordon didn't mesh, or why Chase Stanback left as well?
What is Howland's system? Is it smash mouth defense? Is it motion offense? What is he doing on either ends of the court?
I'm not bailing on UCLA, but please tell me that you are not happy and next year is not a top 30 class of recruits.
Nelson, Honeycutt, Lee (maybe) and the rest should be asked to transfer out.
They simply dont have the talent to measure up to any top 50 program right now.
Those are the facts!

Jammer,
Understand your frustration. Think Stanback was terrible though and have no idea why Gordon didn't mesh with Howland, but I didn't like his attitude from the start. In terms of recruiting agree that next year and last year wasn't the greatest but we still got the #1 center in the nation coming here next year. That isn't too bad and the recruiting season isn't over. We are in the mix for atleast 3 four star and 1 five star recruit. Anyways I am just like you and am bummed when Ucla isn't ALWAYS in the hunt for a national championship but I couldn't feel comfortable ripping on Howland who has done such an INCREDIBLE job of restoring the tradition(except for this year) as a powerhouse. We have been really good for atleast 4-5 years so I will give him a break. Don't understand the defense though and honestly think Drago is a waste. We just don't have a great team this year, but we will get better.

I see what u r sayin:
1) An undersized Reeves Nelson would come off the bench at UNC his 1st yr.
2) Honeycutt wouldn't see the court at UNC his first yr...healthy or not
3) Lee is our best player...still not a pro until Senior year, bulk up buddy
We can't have those 3 guys leave.... Here is what I propose:
Let's trade in Bobo's sloppy hands, overweight Morgan 2pts a game, Anderson D3 prospect, Lane "raw", played poor talent in H.S. looks clueless, Moser hasn't played and is raw #2 and Stover, who went to a small school Div 5 HS team and didnt play anybody!!....all transfer...
then call me...
310-Fuc*-SUC...
5 slots open....maybe we tap the dorms....
I'm not even going to discuss Howland as a coach...I appreciate what he did with talent...
Yeah, NIT is out

Two good wins over the Washington Schools. Love what the kid did on Thursday. Highlite of the year so far for the Bruins.
Josh Smith's injury is a serious one. He has not neen the same since he came back.
Need the kid from Det Country Day as a reliable point gurad. Dont know if Jones can come in as a JCO transfer (UCLA doesnt go that route ever).
If Lane and Stover can get a clue, we could be deep.
Nelson and Honeyccutt will make a difference if they want it bad enough. They have the talent.Wish they had the Thursday hero's heart and passion. That's got to be Howland's trump card. Why he plays Drags is a mystery. One dimensional on O and non existent on D. Lee will get better, but not a true SG. They will miss Roll and his steady play.
Half way through ... let's see what happens.

Josh Smith is 20 to 30 pounds too heavy and will not be able to fill the lanes in a transition game on either end. Use Moser or Lane in the Zone. Drags is absolutely a joke. Why does Howland have a man crush on this dude?
Honeycutt and Nelson will be great Bruins if they stick around long enough and dont listen to Don McClean's stupid comments about coming out early.
Cal will expose them at the guard positions today and Randle will go crazy carving them up.
