Mater Dei won the Orange Holiday Classic championship by beating Foothill in the championship game Wednesday at Chapman University. The Monarchs' Keala King and Tyler Lamb did not start in the Monarchs' first two games, because they were late for a Saturday practice.  Is that the Mater Dei policy, that a player does not start for two games because he is late for a practice? "It was the policy that day," said Mater Dei coach Gary McKnight, smiling. OC Varsity 1/4

Once inside Laker Fieldhouse, John A. Logan’s dynamic duo could be a problem for Lake Land in a 7:30 p.m. men’s basketball game to follow a 5:30 p.m. women’s contest in Great Rivers Athletic Conference openers. Lazeric Jones, a 6-foot-2 point guard for Logan, recently announced his verbal commitment to UCLA. “I also understand Jesse Perry has an offer from Arizona,” Lake Land coach Cedric Brown said. “They are two very talented young men who really make John A. Logan go. They do a good job both from the defensive and offensive end.  Journal Gazette 1/5

Lazeric Jones led the Vols with 25 points including 12 in the second half and five of his team’s nine overtime points. John A. Logan had two other players in double figures with Harris contributing 16 and Jesse Perry adding 15 points.  Journal Gazette 1/6

Mater Dei mashed Orange Lutheran, 82-46, at Mater Dei in the Trinity League opener....Senior guard Tyler Lamb, a UCLA signee, scored 19. Lamb was confident Mater Dei would win. "But we didn't expect to beat them by this much," he said. One reason Mater Dei rolled in this one was the growing chemistry between King and Lamb. When one has the ball, the other is cutting to the basket. Whoever is making that cut better have his hands up because a pass is on its way. OC Varsity 1/8

Recruits

Angelo Chol: The lengthy lefty scored in a variety of ways inside and out. His go-to move is a jump hook over his right shoulder. He gets great elevation on it and his release is quick. He can knock down the jump shot at the elbow as well, although it isn't as consistent as it needs to be -- but much improved from a year ago. In addition, he shows his savvy for the game with his passing ability -- he made a number of fine passes out of the paint area. Despite being very wiry, he is a very solid rebounder to boot. Physically he has a slight frame, but he is very quick off his feet, and he can run all day in transition. Defensively, he has the lateral quickness to guard a 4 and the bounce and length to check a 5. ESPN 1/4

Lamont “MoMo” Jones has experienced disciplinary problems off the court and he looks more comfortable as a shooter rather than a passer. The door is open, especially to Josh Selby or Ray McCallum at the point guard position, to join Arizona and start right away. Tucson Citizen 1/5

Mount Pleasant All-Stater Trey Zeigler proved too much for Dow High on Tuesday, as the host Oilers cruised to a 63-41 Saginaw Valley League victory in boys' basketball. Zeigler, who gave the Chargers match-up problems all night, led the Oilers with 20 points while helping them to a 34-16 halftime lead. Zeigler is a 6-foot, 5-inch guard who's being recruited by some of the top college programs in the nation. "They got ahead early, and we had trouble with Zeigler," Dow coach Dave MacDonald said.  Our Midland 1/6

Sacramento's Josiah Turner, one of the top junior guards in the country, put on quite a show for the fans and UCLA coach Ben Howland at the Oaks Christian Holiday Classic in Southern California Dec. 28. With Howland watching from atop the bleachers, Turner had a career-high 48 points, including the game-winning three-pointer from the top of the key at the buzzer to lead the Dragons to a 71-70 second-round win over Pasadena. Turner made 17 of 30 shots from the field, including four three-pointers, and also hit 10 of 11 free throws. Howland reportedly is strongly interested in the 6-3 Turner, who watched the Bruins play Delaware State the night before at Pauley Pavilion. Turner, who is averaging 28 points, originally committed to Arizona State but re-opened recruiting during the summer. Tristan Thompson had 13 points and 15 rebounds Friday night in leading the No. 3-ranked Findlay Prep basketball team to a 61-47 victory against host Huntington (W.Va.) Prep...Findlay's Nick Johnson added 15 points and four assists. Las Vegas Sun 1/8

Sacramento's Josiah Turner scored 34 points and Oakland's Jabari Brown 33 points in Oakland's 88-81 win over the Dragons. Brown, a 6-5 wing, was playing his first game for the Wildcats after transferring from national power Findlay Prep of Henderson, Nev., earlier in the week. SacBee 1/10
