Abdul-Hamid's Buzzer Beater Lifts Bruins to Victory

By Bruin Basketball Report

Box Score

He's been working his tail off at practice ever since he decided to walk-on at UCLA over three years ago, and today it all paid off.

With 3.2 seconds left and UCLA down by one point, Mustafa Abdul-Hamid took a long pass dribbled to the top of the circle, pump faked his defender in the air, before calmly sinking a 20 foot jump shot at the buzzer to win the game, 62-61.

Ironically Abdul-Hamid was only on the floor because sophomore Jerime Anderson suffered a hip flexor injury and did not suit up for the game.

UCLA started the game at Pauley Pavilion determined to play a 2-3 zone defense all night against Washington.  A solid strategy considering the Huskies were ranked last in the Pac-10 in three-point shooting at 28.9%, and the Bruin defenders have had problems staying in from of offensive players.

But the Huskies (12-6, 3-4) started off hot from the perimeter, hitting their shots. and went into halftime with a 41-37 lead.  Forward Quincy Pondexter was 4 of 4 on his three-pointers and finished with a game-high 23 points.

In the second-half the Bruin zone tightened and did a better job closing out on Husky shooters while holding Washington to just 20 points in the half.

On the offensive end, the UCLA freshmen helped spark the team.

Reeves Nelson finished with 16 points on 6 of 11 shooting while Tyler Honeycutt continued to show off his all-around game.

Honeycutt finished with 10 points and hit all 4 of his shots and finished with a game-high 9 rebounds.  The young freshman also chipped in 6 assists.

But this game belonged to the former walk-on player, Abdul-Hamid, who has since earned a well deserved basketball scholarship at UCLA.

With the poise he displayed in the game tonight it wouldn't be a surprise if Abdul-Hamid saw a little more action on the floor in upcoming games.

The Bruins (8-10, 3-3) will face the Cougars of Washington State at Pauley Pavilion on Saturday afternoon.

I was checking CNN Mobile for updates.
I watched the news and learned Abdul-Hamid hit the gm winner. Man, that's gotta be super sweet. He's the heart of the team playing scout team all 4 years....I'm happy for him!! Awesome!
Glad Anderson is not in. He's a D3 prospect....
At least we found a backup p.g. for now...pathetic... but a good win....
Go Bruins!
Keep it going Bruins...Thunderstorms n Lightning in San Diego...

Yeahhhh Baby! There's just something about the heart and courage of a walk-on! Abdul-Hamid just earned more playing time in my book! I have to be honest, UCLA may be lacking in some area, but two areas to be excited about...Reeves Nelson and Tyler Honeycutt. Once Reeves gets one year of college ball under his belt, he will be a great leader. Tyler looks awesome...and I agree with the Marques Johnson, once he adds some strength, he will be one to reckon with. Go Bruins!!!

I totally agree with Domingo, especially with Tyler. What a game and our defense finally looked good!! Drago is the biggest wuss of all time, but everyone else stepped up and played tough howland defense. Loved it and unbelievable shot at the end. Rolle is a STUD with cluth performance and pretty amazed that Abul-Hamid was in there at the end. Great shot and great heads up play by rolle to get him the ball. Looked great and love our bruins.

Pauley hasn't rocked like that for a while. Last night was really exciting and I am proud of the Bruins, but there are a couple of things that concern me.
First, the Bruins missed several clutch free throws at the end of the game which would have made that final layup by Washington a non issue.
Also, it makes me cringe to imagine Jerime Anderson taking the shot that Mustafa took. From the second that Mustafa launched the ball I knew it was going in. He was so calm about it. I don't think Anderson has that sort of demeanor.
All in all, a great win though. It was good to get Pauley shaking again.

Great moment last night to at least take all that has gone wrong this season off our minds for a bit. Although we're far from getting out of the dark woods i am so proud of Abdul-Hamid. He seems like a throw back to the old days. He works hard, doesn't complain, and waits for his opportunity - no entitlement whatsoever.
The mind of a walkon is so refreshing vs some bluechippers from the past. I hope he gets an opportunity to play more minutes this season. Best thing is he redshirted and he'll be here next season to help steady the young guys too.

dude the future looks bright in westwood imo
next year a line up of lee, honeycutt, nelson, smith and lamb with jones maybe starting in place of lamb and the freshie bigs will be a year older and stronger by then (lane, stover, morgan, even tho i think morgan is a bust, etc).... if that group stays together for 2 years...watch out pac-10

Lee handled the point great last night, in the face of tremendous ball pressure. Hamid deserves to play ahead of Anderson. Swami predicts Howland will finally accept that. I'm sure Anderson tries, but he just doesn't have the vision or reactions of a high Division 1 player.

Why did I know Lee was going to lose the ball at the end...he's a baller but he's not our PG of the future...hopefully, that will be Lamb or Lazuric.

If you could put Mustafa's heart into______________body, the Bruins would have a winning record!

Mustafa deserves his 15 minutes of fame. So happy for him. 11 others could learn about heart from this kid. He made a great play; had the presence of a ball fake and calmly swished it. Still going to be a tough road ahead, but with a wn at WSU as well, hopefully we can come out and sweep the Oregon schools and hope the rest beat up one each other in PAC 10 play.
What a great half court bullet pass by Roll. The kid is a winner.
