JC Point Guard Commits To UCLA
By Bruin Basketball Report
According to ESPN, UCLA has received a commitment from junior college point guard Lazeric Jones to play next season in Westwood.
The 6'2 200 lb powerfully built point guard is considered by many to be the top junior college point guard in the nation. He currently plays for John A. Logan Junior College in Illinois.
Lazeric Jones is averaging 12.6 points on 52% FG shooting and 5.0 assists in 11 games this season. Last year he averaged 9 points, 3.0 assists, and 3.1 steals per contest in 25 games. He also shoots 85% from the free throw line.
Jones gives the Bruins desperately needed depth at point guard, a key position at which they've struggled to find consistency this year from sophomore Jerime Anderson.
Jones played on the same high school team at Simeon Career Academy as Derrick Rose.
In addition to UCLA, Jones was being pursued by other Division I basketball programs including Arizona, Wisconsin, and Tennessee.

Smart man...run the point for 2 years w/ JA as a backup...awesome get!
WELCOME TO CALI!!
He is the top JC player in the nation and only avg 12.6 points and 5 assists a game? That is not very good. Bobo was considered one of the top centers in the nation and his stats were similiar. Makes me nervous
Stats aren't that impressive but I wonder how a JC game translates into DI? Perhaps this move doesn't scare away McCallum from coming to UCLA.
Im hoping for the best. Anything is better than Jerime at this point.
While I always welcome more talent for the Bruins, I too am apprehensive with this commit because it probably will sway PG Ray McCallum from us and towards the Southeast. If I was Coach H, I would still let McCallum know he is the man at the point if he wants it!
But I'll still crack open a cold one for Mr. Jones!
Top JC PG..not player Parkman96. His team is rated #14 in the USA by Sporting News. With Div 1 talented around him, more assists, but avg 5 a game is very good..check other PGs in Div I avg 12.6pts, 52% shooting, 5 assts, and 85% from the line..guess you don't know much about basketball.
Well, the site where everyone is an expert, has video of Lazeric Jones and not surprisingly, they are already disappointed. They usually overhype a recruit to lottery-pick level or immediately judge him as not UCLA-caliber, so who knows. I can not watch the video, but if Jones doesn't look better than Anderson, then I'm worried too.
look at what the JC point has done for SUC so far! They sadly look good now because of that steve nash looking JC transfer at suc
How do you like this line-up next year?
PG Lazeric Jones
SG Malcom Lee
SF Tyler Honeycut
PF Reeves Nelson
C Josh Smith
Tyler Lamb 1st one off the bench who is a solid point Guard and shooting Guard. Also Anderson will help off the bench.
We need a solid banger that could just rebound and defend.
If Ucla can land Nick Johnson who is the late Dennis Johnson's nephew it would be crazy sick. This kid can play and I am a family friend so I know. Nick has a cousin at Gahr high in Cerritos (shaan Johnson) and he is a excellent WR. He is one of the top wr in the state. The whole family is athletic.
You can remove Malcolm Lee from next year's lineup - word is he'll be declaring for the NBA, and his potential alone is enough to get him drafted (1st round even). Don't expect him back at UCLA.
There's also some buzz that others won't be back next season. Your guess is as good as mine on who they are.
aaron I like your lineup. Add Brendan Lane to the rotation and Bobo for spot minutes at C and this is an excellent team.
I doubt Lee leaves. Rumors are rumors but he is at best a low 1st round to high 2nd round. If he stays he can be a lotto on a great Bruins team that will make the tourney.
Everyone knows its the NCAA tourney (i.e. Carmelo,) that makes the stars. Why do you think we've lost so many players early? Its due to our (Bruins) own success.
B Lane...needs to transfer...
I'm down with the JC players. JC players work harder and know that nothing is given. If he's not a star, he'll make the stars work for their spots! Welcome to the Bruin Family Lazeric!
Malcolm Lee in the NBA? You all must be joking. Watch the kid from Kentucky;California; Villanova; NC; Washington; Michigan; Mich State; GA Tech. These guys will go ahead of Lee and that's only a quarter of the ones I can think of. Lee is not in top 100 point guards in the country. Let him go. For him to be thinking about the NBA (a pipe dream) when he should be worrying about leading his current team. How do these kids get into a school like UCLA; they have no idea what it means to put on that jersey. Its shameful and the fault lies with the man "in charge". Howland is gettinga free pass, just like the football coach and even the legend himself, Al Scates has not won a volleyball championship in years. Its time for some changes Dan Guerrero. Forget pay cuts ... just cut them loose.
Jammer, you are a buffoon. Ben Howland is one of only two active coaches to take a team to 3 consecutive Final Fours. And Howland did it recently -- in the last 5 years.
In the 1980s, competing coaches on the recruiting trail took the Stevie Thompsons, the Scott Williamses, and many other top Southern California recruits by asking players who their coach would be the NEXT year at UCLA.
Firing a very successful coach would devastate recruiting for at least 5 years.
Lee may not be ready for the NBA, and the team is certainly go through some growing pains, but you will see, next year is going to filled with wins. Those who are down on Howland are not very educated and know nothing about basketball. Howland is one of just a small handful of coaches that have any class. Everyone will love him next year win they start winning again. Maybe some people who call themselves fans could be positive and have some pride.
Bruinbro,
Why the hostility? Just making a point that 5 assist a game for the top JC point guard might be a reason for concern. Know you might not see this, but am pretty sure you need to chill out. Go bruins and was at the Cal game to see the great play of Rolle
As a boys bsketball coach here in St. Louis for over thirty years,I can't believe some of you so called Bruin fans. Now is the time you need to be behind the coach and his young team. Many of you can't be following the NBA and the number of Bruins playing in the NBA. You have to have seasoned players to win, believe me I know. In 2008 I was Coach of the Year in my conference with eight seniors in a nine players rotation. In 2009, I had only one experienced player back and we won just five games because my young guys didn't know how to finish off games. Now in 2010 the AD has replaced me because some parents complained I didn't know how to coach. From the best coach in the league, to a dummy in two years. I've be Coach of the Year five times. Do you complainers get my point?? Lastly, Lazeric Jones can play. He is very strong physically and knows how to run a team. John A Logan College is about a hour and a half from St. Louis and I have seen him play four times since he has committed and will see him play this Saturday. I've been to the Pac. 10 Tournament for the past five years and will be there this year staying downtown and would love to talk to some of you fair weather fans. Lazeric or 'Zake' as his teammates call him will make you feel better about next season.
Howland is a top level coach, runs a cllean program, and is a proven winner. He recruits and prepares top level talent every year but looses key players who leave early for the NBA.
The problem isn't with the coach or his staff, it's with the lack of loyalty of tday's college athletes. Imagine players like Love, Farmar, Westbrook, Holiday, etc, staying 4 years and we might be talking more Final Fours and maybe even National Champs.
Also, look at other schools and some of the key players who left early and the NCAA rules fall out they leave behind. Howland runs a clean program and has turned away from talent to keep it that way.
Jones will be good. Howland knows his stuff. More talent to the Pac-10 makes me happy.
I hope my AZ Wildcats land Jordin Mayes or Ray. Go Pac.
I don't know if anyone is still following this thread, but I thought some end of season stats for Jones would be worth while.
14.5 ppg on 51.8% shooting & 45.8% 3-pointers
77.5% f/t; 4.8 assists/game; 2.4 steals/game;
3.7 rebounds/game
A dont talk about my cousin like that dont gety mad You cant do the same thing he doing. Go head ZEEK do your thing.
