Mater Dei boys basketball coach Gary McKnight entered Monday night’s season-opener in the Loara Varsity Tournament needing one victory to tie the CIF-Southern Section record for career coaching victories....Keala King, a transfer from Dominguez of Compton, chipped in 13 points and nine rebounds, while Tyler Lamb added 12 points and five steals. I mean, things might technically get better if only because they can't get worse. And the Pac-10 is awful, so that'll help. But having just spent three days watching the Bruins up close, I'm doubtful Ben Howland will have a nationally relevant team until at least next year, when heralded recruits Josh Smith and Tyler Lamb enroll (and Tyler Honeycutt isn't bothered by injuries). Right now, Howland simply doesn't have the players to be very good, and we can debate why if you want. CBS Sports (Parrish) 12/3

The Monarchs, ranked No. 3 in the Southland by The Times, improved to 4-0 with a 76-63 victory over Los Alamitos in the championship of the Loara tournament. If there was a surprise it was that the score was relatively close and the Griffins actually outscored the Monarchs, 14-8, in the second quarter.... Keala King had 17 points, 18 rebounds and six assists for Mater Dei, which also received 19 points and 10 rebounds from Tyler Lamb. LA Times 12/6

Led by a dominating performance from 6-foot-3 junior guard Josiah Turner, Sacramento High School opened its boys basketball season with an impressive 63-57 win over St. Mary's of Berkeley Saturday night at the Nor Cal Tip Off Classic at Newark Memorial High School. Turner, considered the top junior class recruit in Northern California, scored 27 points and was named the Player of the Game. Sac Bee 12/1
Someone forgot to pass the memo to Findlay Prep that tonight was supposed to be their first loss of the season, as they exchanged blows with the Christ School for the majority of the game before eventually pulling away for an impressive 80-64 victory....Guards Nick Johnson and Jabari Brown ignited the scoring run netting 17 points and 14 points respectively for the Pilots. The Findlay Prep basketball team got 17 points and 13 rebounds Saturday night from Texas-commit Tristan Thompson in a 78-41 victory against Our Savior New American of New York in the Pilots final game at Marshall County Hoopfest in Kentucky....Senior Godwin Okonji added nine points and 15 rebounds, while Nick Johnson had 17 points and eight rebounds. The Bruins need help at the point NOW. How 'bout that Lazeric Jones? He's a JUCO sophomore and might be ready to play on day one. Anybody know if he can transfer in for the second semester this year?
Still bummed we didn't get Harrison Barnes. Hopefully Josh will be good, but from what I hear he really has put on a lot of weight and isn't considered the top of his class anymore.

Agreed. Bobo was considered honestly the number 2 or 3 center nationally out of high school. What a joke. I don't even think Mata was considered in the top 100 players overall and he was a stud. So sometimes recruiting rankings really don't mean much. Just read the EPSN, Scout & rivals site occasionally and it sounds like Josh Smith was considered number 1 for awhile than dropped down and then dropped down even further with last summers performance. You absolutely never know though and maybe this year he is going to dominate and get back to the elite status he was as a Junior. Jrue Holiday was one of the bigger dissapointments because he was good but didn't do ANYTHING for us last year. Same with Trevor Ariza and it really makes me angry
No more prima donna one and dones like Jrue -- they really hurt programs.
Although Kevin Love was a one and done -- he wasn't a prima donna. He took everything Howland threw at him and tried to get better. Love became better for it. He almost took us to a championship.
Drew Gordon ---> prima donna. Wouldn't buy into the program and now he's left.
I'd rather have a 4-star Lorenzo Mata who will be here all four years than a one and done. I guess we do have one with Reeves Nelson!
Unfortunately, you have to recruit the one and dones to block the USC's and Kentucky's of the world that will certainly take them. Also interested in Lazeric Jones myself. Rare JUCO transfer if indeed he comes to UCLA.
Just stop! UCLA is not in the top 100 basketball programs this year. It's that simple. Unless there is kid who simply wants to play for the Bruins and no one else, recruiting is going to be a daunting task just to lure them away from other Pac 10 schools, let alone the country's elite.
Stop the excuses: Other teams lost players to the NBA; they are still in the top 10. Holliday leaving early was a blow, but Howland needed to understand that there was a possibility of him going after one year.
The problem lies in the fact that these kids are not elite athletes; weren't the best on their high school teams and dont have the skills to defend man to man. This is why we have something called zone defence.
The kid from Detroit Country Day is a silky smooth player, but UCLA will not be high on his list; so they can forget about him.
Josh Smith got hurt in his last game; so that might be a concern.
Develop Moser, Honeycutt, Nelson and Morgan and honor Roll for his consistent play and pray that Lee and Anderson can make the plays.
UCLA has never gone the route of JUCO transfer; s no idea if Jones is even a possibility.
10 wins will be a miracle this year.
