Bruin Recruiting: Prep News Roundup (10/6)

Commits

If that's not enough for the Mustangs' defense to worry about, there's also senior tight end Reeves Nelson. A standout basketball player who has made a verbal commitment to play for UCLA, the 6-foot-8, 240-pound Reeves has six receptions for 156 yards, averaging 26 yards per catch and two touchdowns. Ledger Dispatch 10/3

High school center Anthony Stover has verbally committed to Head Coach Ben Howland and the UCLA program. The lanky 6'10 210 lb senior recently transferred from Renaissance Academy in La Canada to Winward High in Los Angeles. Stover joins a burgeoning UCLA 2009 recruit class that already includes forwards Brendan Lane, Reeves Nelson, and Tyler Honeycutt. Bruin Basketball Report 10/3

Recruits

Derrick Favors, ranked fourth in the Class of 2009 by Rivals, recently narrowed his list of finalists down from 10 to six. Making the cut, according to Scout.com, were Georgia, Georgia Tech, N.C. State, Florida State, Memphis and Kentucky. That leaves Florida, Kansas, Connecticut and UCLA to exit stage left. Fayetteville Observer 9/29

Xavier Henry, a 6-foot-6 senior guard from Putnam City (Okla.) High, will make his official visit to Memphis this weekend. He will visit KU for the Oct. 17 Late Night in the Phog, then pick between the two schools, his dad, Carl, told Rivals.com. Lawrence Journal World 9/30

Fairfax High's Renardo Sidney will make a recruiting visit to Mississippi State next week and is also planning a trip to Nevada Las Vegas, his father says. Sidney, a 6-foot-10 senior center, also has had conversations with USC and UCLA, but his father said Tuesday that neither is a front-runner. "We don't have a front-runner," he said. Sidney Sr. hinted that he appreciates extra attention. "If you're recruiting a big-time player, you should recruit him like he's a big-time player and call him every day, not just once every two weeks... That's not interest." LA Times 9/30

Michael Snaer, a 6-4 senior shooting guard from Moreno Valley, Calif., who has visited Missouri, Florida State and Marquette, tells Rivals.com he will visit UCLA this weekend and Kansas for the Oct. 17 Late Night in the Phog. KU Sports 10/1

Lance Stephenson, a 6-5, 195-pound senior shooting guard from Lincoln High in Brooklyn, N.Y., will visit KU this month, likely for Late Night, Rivals.com reports. Stephenson also wants to visit Memphis, Southern Cal and UCLA this month. Other schools on his list: Pittsburgh, Indiana, North Carolina, Seton Hall. He will not sign until April. KU Sports 10/3

Brandon Jennings said that three high school players in the class of 2009 — the California big men Renardo Sidney and Jordan Hamilton and Lance Stephenson of Brooklyn — were talented enough to play professionally in Europe. Stephenson’s father, Lance Sr., has expressed interest in making the move. “I would ask them this: What do you want to get out of it?” Jennings said. “If they’re coming over here for the money, don’t do it. If they want to learn and get better, they should think about it. If you have a bad attitude, it’s not going to be good.” NY Times 10/4

What??? Oh man... U$C can have Sidney! Poor kid. Can't comment on his attitude (I have heard this is a problem) since I haven't seen/read anything directly related to this... but everything I have heard quoted from his dad = HIGH MAINTENANCE!

Wow, Sidney and his dad continue to strike me as a pair of massive head-cases.
I agree with the above - Howland should cut any ties with Sidney ASAP.

I agree! Drop the sucka! Not because the son is messed up, but because the dad seems like a real loser! I guess he's a little bitter that the local teams haven't shown much interest in his kid. Actually, not much of the nation has either! What does that tell you, Mr. Sidney? Lay off! You're hurting your kid's future!
UCLA doesn't need him. Maybe Upper Montana State Jr. College Technical Academy can use him!
Get Snaer and we're done for the year!

With all due respect, Mr. Sidney, but if your son were a "big time player" then he would show up every game and play like it. All I've heard is that this kid has all the potential in the world, but lacks the desire to be great. He rose to prominence his sophomore year and has been resting on his laurels ever since. He'll be a one and done wherever he goes, then end up being shocked when he falls all the way to the late 2nd round if he gets drafted at all.

I want to add more thoughts about Renardo Sidney... he is very typical of the overhyped, high-maintenance, me-first player that Steve Lavin made a living of recruiting to Westwood. I'm so thankful that Coach Howland has rebuilt our beloved program in his image and brings in tough, team-first athletes who understand and appreciate what an honor it is to wear those legendary four letters on your chest.

I couldn't agree more with all the comments above. Sydney's dad is a loser. Although I would hate to see Sydney become a Bruin, it is only because of his dad and not the kid himself. Maybe he's not a headcase, but having a toxic parent around is bad enough. I wish Sydney the best of luck as it's got to be hard to be that age, with that much talent, and have a knucklehead for a father.

I know you are a smart kid....

Hey BBR-
Question for you...If Holiday is a one and done and he leaves with Collison, who will back up Anderson at point next year? Can Lee fill in or do we need to get somebody this year?
The reason I'm asking is that I just noticed that the Scout.com prospect list still shows Elijah Johnson. A lot of the other longshots (Lance Stephenson, etc.) were all dropped off the list, but Johnson stayed on. Does that mean that there's still interest in him as a point?
Please edumacate me!
Thanks!

if we land Jeremy Tyler, we'll be in good shape. and if we get Snaer, we'll be a final four team. a lot ifs... for now, we should be happy with the guys that BH recruited. they're great kids. Go Bruins!

DW - Snaer had a great visit to UCLA over the weekend, however, he is still planning on attending Late Night at the Phog in Kansas on 10/17. We suspect Snaer will make a decision shortly thereafter.
KDL - The problem with Elijah Johnson may be grades. As with some other potential recruits, getting past the Admissions door at Murphy is sometimes more difficult than getting though the gates at Pauley. Its too bad - EJ is quite a talent. No concerns for UCLA though, Malcolm Lee can definitely slide into the back-up 1 in '09. Its unfortunate UCLA didn't get either Bradley or Gaddy, they would have filled that spot nicely as well.

Hey maybe we could use Reeves at the TE spot with Moya next year to go along with Craft's QB maturity going into his senior season? Sorry with the left field comment but it kind of breaks up the monotonous talk on guessing, second-guessing, re-hashing, over-analyzing and the likes on potential prospects and where they stand this hour.
I think a lot of you guys are too hard on BBR trying to pry additional insight for snipit of information.
If BBR has the news, he gives us the news!
Keep up your great work BBR and sorry if we ask too many questions sometimes!

I have said it previously that Reeves probably can play TE and use that scholarship. With his size, speed, and agility, it is imo what will make him a dangerous TE.
Not to mention the fact that he probably would have a more likely NFL career than a NBA one. Course this is all just speculation.

BruinFan or BBR,
Are there still pick up games going on at the SAC?
If so, when?

Sorry for more speculating Brew In but I think it's in our Bruin blue blood to do so.
This is how I'm seeing this year's squad. Curious on agreements, differences, etc...
POS. Starter-Back Up-Reserve
PG Collison-Anderson-Hamid
SG Holiday-Lee
SF Shipp-Roll
PF Keefe-Gordon-Dragovic
C Morgan-Aboya

Brew In... hoops recruiting speculation is the single best diversion at this time when our football program is on the rebound.
Thanks for everything BBR!

Brew in : Dude, folks here post in May about the upcoming season. We are Bruin fans. That's fan, short for fanatic. It's all fun and it's safer than crack. And frankly. the only thing I can think of that's even more neurotic is spending time complaining about Bruin fan's fanaticism on this board. Now that's a little weird.

Totally agree Sidney is not worth the trouble. Can't wait for this years squad and just wish it was mandatory for atleast 4 of the top 10 recruits in the country go to Ucla. Love our progam and just am hoping it won't be to difficult this year without a proven front court. Aboya is strong, but don't think Keefe is too much of a presence. Also have no clue at Morgan and his stats in high school really weren't that impressive. Go bruins and hopefully Darren can carry us one more time!! That guy is amazing.

Hey everyone, I'm all hugs to my fellow Bruin brethren and love all your input. My main concern is that we seem to ask BBR (the man) for too much at times.
Historically, everything that comes thru the report is timely and accurate. Remember BBR (the man) is actually that, one man and he's what keeps this site so A-1!
My bruin hat off to him, he does one hellava job!!!
As for the rest of ya', I love you all and this place is collectively THE BEST!!!
Almost noon, I say we all crack one open in anticipation of the first exhibition game come November 3rd!!!

Hey Brew In, now you're talkin brother! Cold one on a hot day. I especially like the frosty cans where the mountains turn Bruin blue when it's ready for consumption!
Oh yeah screw USC... Sorry, just felt like I had to say that!

Pick up games at Pauley:
BruinFan made a guest appearance and the door was locked. This was right b4 school started. Pick up games in the SAC "Student Athletic Center," where you can see a lot of pros and our team play, are during the summer.
BBR, I think you must sit on the bench. I mean last year, you told us
K Love had a huge scratch on his back - and that was from practice.... only you know this type of stuff....thanks for stellar reporting....
Cheers to my Bruin Nation!!
Snaer - become a BRUIN so your parents can come watch you play and you can improve your game. Oh yeah, the girls are better looking in your backyard/SO CAL!!

Brew In: I'm with you, and I didn't mean to come off as being too critical. You are right, of course. I just like to know where the recruits are headed before they have actually decided. I look forward to an exciting season and I look forward to sharing my 2-cents with my fellow Bruins. And by the way, USC really does suck. Big time.

Did you watch March Madness last year at all?

At Oct 11, 2008, 1:52:00 PM, Anonymous Parkman said...

George,
I did but that really was ONE game. He needs to step up big time and be much more of a force now that K-Love is gone. Also besides that game he really didn't knock down any outside shots and wasn't super impressed by his strength inside. Think he is a hard worker so looking forward to seeing his improvement this year. Parkman

you did not watch the same postseason I did. Keefe was an absolute animal in several games. am not talking about the three he knocked down 9which of course was crucial) but rather his ability to throw his body around. he started looking like the all-american that he is and i expect more from him this year.
