Bruin Recruiting: Prep News Roundup (6/30)

J'Mison Morgan attended his first class at UCLA, meaning he is officially enrolled in school. Morgan was released from his letter of intent with LSU and signed scholarship papers with UCLA but those weren't binding until he attended his first class. LA Daily News 6/24

Recruits

A senior-to-be at Fairfax (Los Angeles), Renardo Sidney, has attended three high schools in three years. In 2006, his parents, Renardo Sr. and Patricia, uprooted the family's Delta stakes in Jackson, Miss., for Lakewood, Calif., enrolling their son at Artesia High before transferring to Fairfax last summer. Sidney, who says the family migrated west to market both his basketball skills and his 17-year-old sister Tiarra's modeling career, expects to whittle away his list of potential college landing spots while shrinking his waist. "I'm trying to work on some package deals," says Sidney, who includes Louisville, Texas, USC, UCLA, Kansas, Florida and Texas A&M as his top suitors. "Antonio Bigelow, Kawad [Leonard], Eric [Swoopes], Lance [Stephenson], and Jordan [Hamilton] are all guys I'd like to play with." Sports Illustrated 6/24

Tyler Honeycutt scored 29 points and grabbing 19 rebounds as Sylmar went on a 19-4 second-half run. Honeycutt burst onto the scene this spring playing extremely well at travel ball tournaments and receiving six scholarship offers. "All the guys leaving Sylmar I guess really helped me out because I can now shine more," Honeycutt said. "Now I know I'm the first option. We really wanted to win this game bad. I knew I had to do more in the second half after I saw it was tied at halftime." More is exactly what he did, scoring 16 points in the second half and continually beating Van Nuys defenders to offensive rebounds and putbacks. LA Daily News 6/24

Golden already has been credited with one assist for the 2009-10 UA basketball season. Due in no small part to his friendship with Golden, Vallejo (Calif.) Bethel High power forward Greg Smith orally committed to Lute Olson's Wildcats on Monday, making the highly touted senior-to-be the first member of the 2009 hoops recruiting class. "Robert is my boy," Smith said. "He loves it there and that was a big reason I knew it would be a place I want to go." That and the fact Smith expects to compete for more than just Pac-10 championships Tucson Citizen 6/24

Renardo Sidney spent most of Wednesday's Fairfax tournament game against La Canada shooting jump shots. He was one for nine at one point. Fairfax was able to come away with a 66-62 victory. Sidney finished with 12 points on five-of-15 shooting. Lance Bailey led Fairfax with 18 points. LA Times 6/25

Taft overwhelmed Sylmar with its defense and size. The Toreadors jumped out to a 19-6 lead after one quarter and made things difficult for everyone except Tyler Honeycutt. Honeycutt, who has sixscholarship offers on the table, including three from Pac-10 schools, had 18 points and 17 rebounds. LA Daily News 6/24

Single moms, he said, sometimes make themselves easy targets to "the parasites," self-serving coaches and advisors trying to work their way into a player's inner circle. "A lot of the moms don't really know too much about the game, or the sport, and they think, 'Wow. Here's a positive male role model for my kid,' and they hand them over," he said. "Sometimes, if you show a little bit of interest, they say, 'Take him. He's yours." Xavier Henry has seen those kids, too, and feels fortunate to have his family engaged in his decisions. The 6-6 swingman from Oklahoma City attended the camp for the second time this season, even though a cracked bone in his ankle prevented him from playing hard. "I don't listen to anybody else other than my family," he said. "Just my immediate family, too, not branching out to all my cousins that I supposedly have." He chuckled at the ridiculousness, but has seen others who weren't as savvy. "You can tell when kids have an entourage or just somebody that's the main man or something like that," he said. "They're trying to get something out of them." USA Today 6/25

Jeremy Tyler, a 6-foot-9 forward from San Diego, has the highest ceiling of any of the prospects in the country at this stage. He also might be one of the toughest players to read. Immensely talented, Tyler can split the middle with outstanding performances and dubious duds on the grand stage. "To be honest, we are still waiting for someone to establish himself as the top prospect in the class," national basketball recruiting analyst Jerry Meyer said. "Tyler has been up and down in the last year, but when he is on his game, he is a dominant player. He has a great blend of athleticism and physicality to his game. "His explosiveness around the basket and his upside are intriguing. The question is whether he can develop the mentality to produce day in and day out and to develop his game to what it could be." Rivals 6/26

Renardo Sidney, considered one of the elite players in the Class of 2009, will likely explore the possibility of going overseas as well. "Brandon's decision will definitely have an effect on the younger kids," said Sidney's father, Renardo Sidney Sr. "For us, it's definitely an option." The elder Sidney said he feels it's unfair that the NCAA earns revenue off its players, while the players get little in return. "Kids feel like they're a victim of the NCAA and I don't think anyone is happy with it," he said. "You can't have someone buy a kid a hamburger, but you can sell their jerseys and fill the arenas and it's fine." What Sidney seems to forget is that the kids do get a free education. That's worth about $50,000 per year in many places these days. But let's face it. That's irrelevant to many of these kids. Fox Sports 6/27

The Toreadors couldn't hold on to a 10-point first-half lead Friday night and suffered a 69-58 loss to Dominguez of Compton in the quarterfinals of the Nike/Fairfax tournament. Jordan Hamilton, who is appealing for a fifth year of eligibility, led Dominguez with 25 points off the bench. Thurman Woods added 17 for Dominguez, which led 30-27 at halftime. LA Daily News 6/27

After saying he was wide open throughout the recruiting process, Bishop McGuinness forward Daniel Orton named seven schools as his favorites. Kentucky leads for Orton's services followed by UConn, Ohio State, Kansas, UCLA, Texas, and Oklahoma. News Ok 6/27

Jordan Hamilton scored 31 points to help Dominguez defeat Fairfax, 66-56, Saturday night in a semifinal game of the Fairfax tournament. It was an impressive victory considering that Fairfax was finally at full strength, with Renardo Sidney and Solomon Hill both playing. LA Times 6/28

Jordan Hamilton scored 32 points to help Dominguez defeat Westchester, 85-78, in the championship game of the Fairfax tournament. Hamilton was chosen the tournament's most valuable player. He scored five consecutive points to break a 69-69 tie with slightly more than three minutes left. Jordin Mayes led Westchester with 23 points. LA Times 6/29

is it just me or does sidney and his family come off as incredibly spoiled brats? that could be some dangerous chemistry to disrupt an otherwise cohesive team. might fit right in with $$UC.

Does Renardo Sydney Sr. really think that the NCAA is completely at fault here? If it were up to the NCAA, these kids would stay in school and get an education to help them after their basketball careers are over. It is also the NBA rule that is forcing these kids to go to college for a year. But hey, how cares about the education of your son, when he could be making millions for you... If Sidney's father is indicative of his Jr.'s attitude toward the college basketball game, he may not be fit for our program. Coach Howland can work wonders, and if we get him, I won't do any second guessing. However, I've seen this kid play a couple times, and he has not exemplified what Coach Howland expects in his players.

Sidney has bad news written all over him.
Go ahead and take your posse and package deal overseas someplace - I would just assume never hear from you again.

I agree with the above. I don't blame the kid, I blame the parents. I hope he matures, but it won't be any time soon.

Concur. Education is the least thing on their minds. I think the family underestimates the competition at this level and overestimates their guy's ability - for every Kobe, how many washouts are there?

If you can't hack a year of college and want to try and take your game over to Europe where you may be in a situation where you don't know the language or the customs or the style of play - good luck to you.

Amen to everything that's been written about Sidney so far. If he eventually opens his eyes and sees what's really happening, he'll get some advice from experts as opposed to his "living vicariously though your kids" parents! Sr. sounds like a know-it-all father who can't seem to grasp the fact that he's probably the reason why his kid has very few offers. Do you think mom is a wanna be model also living vicariously through her daughter? Sounds like a situation that can't be rectified as long as the parents are preaching their so called "guidance". I applaud their wanting their kids to be successful, but they should do it in a way that benefits the kids and doesn't make them look like a spoiled family. I mean, transferring every time they don't get the answer they want? Gimme a break!
Like Rob said above, I don't blame the kids. I blame the parents!
Any chance they can get some therapy??!!

I have never spoken with Renaldo or his father. Have you? He may be all the negative things I read but haven't you realized by now not to believe everything you read, especially on the internet? Remember the WMD that lead to our invasion of Iraq. Remember the poor guy charged with the Olympics bombing, or how about the McMurtry family.

McMurtry family? Perhaps you can educate me. Or maybe you are referring to those irresponsible journalists who referred to the McMurtry's as the McMartin's? I don't think poor Jimmy McMurtry ever lived that one down. BTW, remind me never to believe everything I read on basketball blogs either.

did u really just use the war in iraq to say that we can't make conclusions about sydney or his family?? worst logic ever.
And I agree with with everything thats been said, he doesnt seem like the type of player we want, or frankly need at this point.

Please, let's not have any more political comments re: comparisons about Sidney's recruitment and Iraq WMD issues. This venue should be about UCLA basketball, not politics. My view...one-and-done Renardo seems pretty full of himself, but I'll leave it to BH's decision whether to recruit.

All excellent comments about Sidney and I've said this all along... Ben has not made an offer and all of the above must be the reason. Because on the positive side, the critics say his talent is unmatched! I think Ben is staying away for good reason(s).
Also, thanks to everyone for bagging on the attempt by certain individuals to throw in their political digs here and there. Save that crap for one of those hate blogs!
Besides, I think the only hate that should be "certified" on this site is for that dried-blood and gold colored football school across town... Agreed guys? BruinFan, George, Brew In, DB, anyone?

hulaheaven: I think the folks on this board are really very fair about potential recruits. In fact, I defended Howland's overtures to Sydney as I think someone his age has to be given a lot of slack as they are, by definition, brain-damaged at that age. However, we now have enough information about him, his dad, and his pattern of behaviour that would lead one to conclude that this kid is (for now) a loser. He walks like a duck and talks like a duck. If dad had any sense, he would call Howland and apologize for his insecure behavior and beg him to help un-do 17 years of crappy parenting. Maybe Howland could take him as a walk-on.

At Jun 30, 2008, 2:17:00 PM, Anonymous george said...

Rob,
1) Please define "loser." BTW, have you had multiple scholarship offers (whether or not UCLA approached you)?
2) Perhaps Sid should try out for the water polo team?
3) Do you speak duck?
4) Educate me, what did Sid's father do to BH that he would have to personally apologize to him for?
5) Why would BH want sid's father as a walk-on?
I want to know. Enquiring minds want to know.

george,
1) "Loser": someone of flawed character.
2) Can Sidney swim? If not, water polo would be a bad choice.
3) I don't speak duck. I did take four years of Spanish and can barely speak a word. Languages just aren't my thing.
4) Sid's father did a horrible job raising Sid and preparing him for the post-high school world.
5) Sid's dad could save us a scholarship. We are 10 or 11 deep this year. We need someone to help out with serving Gatorade. Sid's dad would be perfect.

Here's a link that has little more info.

Also, players usually get offers from schools when they inform the school that they are seriously considering attending. Sometimes a weaker school(USC) will throw out an offer early hoping to help the kid make the a quick decision, but the good schools(UCLA) are usually patient. If he's telling the UCLA staff that he wants to look around at other schools then they might be holding their scholarship. Offers can have a big impact on a programs recruiting so you can't just give them away. Remember when Nelson decided to go to UCLA? He did it right after the Wear twins decided to go to UNC. Not having offers doesn't mean its a bad kid, maybe schools aren't convinced they have a chance. I would rather have recruit being honest about their level of interest instead of the athlete leading us on. Daniel Orton had a long list with few offers but nobody was blaming his character. Jerime Anderson didn't have many offers, but it wasn't anything bad, he just made it clear UCLA was the favorite. Let's not kill Sidney about every little detail.....

Rob,
I'm starting to like you. You DO have a sense of humor! ("See Martha, he does have a sense of humor.")
Banteringly,
George.
Por cierto, a propósito, I todavía no sé por qué el padre de Sid tendría que pedir disculpas al entrenador Howland. ¿Puedes ayudarme a entender?
Quack quack. George.

Ok I am missing something here. Scout.com for a few weeks have Lance Stephenson interested in ucla and the bruins offered him a scolarship. Now it shows ucla didnt offer him a scholarship.
Was the original information not correct or did something negative happen that led the Bruins staff to revoke an offer?

At Jul 2, 2008, 5:58:00 AM, Anonymous kdl1984 said...

I noticed the same thing too! What happened to the scholie offer to Stephenson?
On another note, I noticed that they offered Michael Snaer who was always interested in the Bruins but never had the offer.
And we still have offers on the table for PF's, eventhough we already have commitments from two.
Granted, Nelson is not as offensively gifted as one might hope, but do we need a third? (Van Treese)
I think we need to start looking hard at SGs and SFs. Getting somebody like Nolan Dennis or Lance Stephenson or Xavier Henry would satisfy both, IMO.
Decently sized and able to play both positions.
Forget Sidney. Offer Stover or Orton now! Lock 'em up and we'll be set!
But, of course, I will always defer to the new millionaire, Coach Ben!
BBR- Any new comments from you?

anyone reading what that idiot jennings (AZ) is spouting because he can't seem to generate even a minimum SAT score? let's see if ol' lute will kiss the little brat's arse to get him to play at AZ for a year.
"student athletes." what a joke.

At Jul 2, 2008, 3:09:00 PM, Anonymous Parkman said...

I think Sidney is bad news and once the family starts complaining that the student-athlete should be paid more than a full scholarship to UCLA(which is all of your tutition, books, and believe me $800 a month is PLENTY if you are a student at Ucla) it is a telling sign that the parents don't give even a small ounce about school and don't consider going to Ucla the opportunity that it is. If they have any forsight at all they will realize if Sidney is good he will make millions the year after he goes there and all of this banter really reflects poorly on them and their son. Regardless, still think Sidney is a top talent but going with my gut think he sounds like he has a serious attitude and might be a major blessing if he doesn't attend Ucla. However if he does, respect Howland a ton and will totally defer to what the coach sees in him and not what I thought from the few sound bites I have heard. Go Bruins and can't wait for the season.

DB- I read something today that didn't list UCLA as one of the schools he's interested in. Maybe that's the reason the scholarship was taken back. That's ok. I thought it was a longshot that we landed him anyway. Now, we should be looking at Tyler Honeycutt. He's more local and would probably stay longer than a year.
BBR- You know anything about this?

Thanks for the update Brew In! I hadn't seen that. Oh well, so much for Dennis and Stephenson. Like I said in my prior message, time for us to look at Tyler Honeycutt! Anybody know anything about the kid? All I know is that he's local and isn't as highly touted as the others. But, those are the ones that end up making a big impression (see Westbrook).
On a football note, is anybody else getting tired of suc stealing our players (Byron Moore)? I just hate it when a kid commits, then changes his mind. Really gets my goat. No loyalty at all and no responsibility for his own actions. And these kids don't understand that it really pisses people off!
Just part of college sports, I guess!
