After missing five games with a stress fracture in his right foot, the Mitty High senior Drew Gordon broke his left foot in two places in his first game back, a 46-45 overtime loss to Riordan. The 6-foot-9, UCLA-bound forward will have his foot in a cast for approximately six weeks. He's hoping to play again if his team can get to the Division II state title game (March 15) without him."It's a possibility, but not a big one," Gordon said of his chances of returning. "I'm trying to get it strong so it doesn't happen again." Gordon said Monday that he landed on his foot wrong at the end of the third quarter. "I knew it was broken," Gordon said. "I kept playing knowing that I was going to be out anyway. Running up and down the court, it felt like someone was stabbing my foot. I tried to get a rebound in overtime and broke it a second time." Before Gordon exited the game in overtime, overcome by the pain, he had 21 points and 11 rebounds and hit a three-pointer at the end of regulation to send the game to the extra period. MODESTO CHR. 99, ESCALON 54, at Escalon -- Reeves Nelson had 36 points -- 18 in the first quarter -- as the Crusaders (13-4, 6-0 TVL) thumped the Cougars (5-14, 2-5). Modesto Bee 1/23

MODESTO CHR. 65, HUGHSON 58, at Hughson -- UCLA-commit Reeves Nelson scored 26 points, but the top-ranked small-school Crusaders (12-4, 6-0) struggled before putting away the Huskies (14-4, 5-3). Dabrail Henton scored 15 to help compensate for the absence of guard D.J. Seeley, who was out with an ankle injury. Modesto Bee 1/25

Jrue Holiday - No need to convince us that he is the best and most complete perimeter player in this class, but will he get the chance in a potentially loaded UCLA backcourt to to convince the NBA executives? Rivals 1/25

There's no secret the key to staying close to Modesto Christian is limiting the number of times Reeves Nelson touches the ball. So that's the way Ripon High began its Trans-Valley League showdown Saturday night, blanketing the talented junior with two or three players. But as soon as that method began to work, Daniel Lemburg shot a hole in the strategy....Once Lemburg began to hit from the outside, Nelson found room to roam in the paint, and he responded with an impressive triple-double performance of 38 points, 17 rebounds and 10 blocked shots. Recruits

DaShonte Riley, a 6-foot-11 junior who has scholarship offers from Ohio State, Michigan State, Michigan and Georgetown, blocked six shots and grabbed nine rebounds. Riley, all arms and legs, is definitely a project. “But he’s almost 7-feet tall and he has an 89-inch wing span,” Keener said. “You can’t coach that.” Canton Rep 1/22

The #1 sophomore in the country, 6'11" Jeremy Tyler had a less than stellar performance scoring 6 points with 2 rebounds and a technical foul. By the end of the third quarter the Judges would be up by 33 points and by the end of the game, three San Diego players would have picked up three technical fouls as the team slowly self-destructed. CaliHiSports 1/22

But with standout 6-foot-10 junior Brendan Lane getting plenty of support from the likes of Zach Moss, Derek Faulkner, Chris Garrison and Jackson Cummings, the Thun-der kicked its running game into high gear and less than three minutes later held a comfortable 62-46 lead. Lane's 17 points topped Rocklin. Loomis News 1/22

At the opening tip-off, the 6-foot-10 Renardo Sidney lined up across from Siva, 6-foot-1 in high-tops. Siva didn't even attempt to leap for the tip and ran back on defense. That would be Franklin's strategy for the afternoon: make up for its lack of size with hustle. "We've got heart, and we're not afraid of anybody," Siva said. The Quakers didn't stop Sidney; the center had 24 points and 22 rebounds. But with a combination of Keiwaun McMorris and Jesse Hopson, reserve forwards who played their largest roles of the season, the Quakers tried their best to disrupt Sidney's timing and deny him the ball. Seattle Times 1/22

Mason Plumlee scored a team-high 14 points Tuesday, helping the Greenies improve to 21-2 overall and 9-0 in the Carolinas Athletic Association. The Greenies scored 22 points in the first quarter and led 37-17 at halftime. Citizen Times 1/23

Colony 81, Don Lugo 54: Tyler Lamb scored 20 points, five rebounds and five assists and Miles Holland added 15 as the Titans (14-7, 6-0) took a 44-25 halftime lead en route to the victory. Don Lugo (8-11, 2-3) was led by Eric Sanabria, who scored 18 points. SB Sun 1/26

Junior forward Jordan Hamilton had 38 points and 13 rebounds and Myron Green scored 17 of his 25 points in the second half as Dominguez defeated the host Gladiators, 94-80....Gahr cut the lead to 65-58 to start the fourth quarter but Hamilton caught fire in the final eight minutes, scoring 16 points as the Dons went on a 20-7 run to stretch their advantage. I hope these new recruits are fast - UCLA's defense has dropped this year. Final Four looking less and less likely. The current offense is too unpredictable and without a consistent defense either = early exit! UGH! Hope I'm wrong.

I concur with bruinfan: take a deep breath and relax. The team is still getting healthy and figuring out its strengths and weaknesses, especially on offense. I agree that we've dropped off a touch on D, but we're still very good on that end.
A lot of difficult, entertaining Pac-10 games lie ahead of us... try to enjoy the ride. There will be plenty of time to worry about the NCAA tournament later.

man this drew gorden kid is definately a howland-type player, but also not too smart... he knew he broke his leg and continued playing and broke it at a 2nd place... wow! does he not care about his future at all and is a team-first guy?

No offense to any of the present Bruins, but when Jrue makes it to UCLA, he's going to start or come off the bench and play starter minutes, like Westbrook is doing right now. He's THAT good. Take it to the rack, drill it from downtown, shoot free throws, lockdown D, it's all there.
Just like K-Love is starring, so will Jrue. Take that to the bank.
BTW, just a dream of this Bruin fan, but can you imagine the frontcourt of K-Love boarding and Drew Gordon coming in for weakside blocks? That would be sick.

The Holiday, Gordon, Anderson, Lee class is better than the Afflalo, Farmar, Shipp, Mata class, hands down. No doubt about it. If you have not seen them play yet, wait 'til you see these young men play! You won't believe it! Interesting too is that both classes have 3 perimeter players and 1 inside player.
Hey BBHR, what's the latest on Sidney?

2 years ago at this time we were 16-4 and made the NC game
Last year we were 18-2 and made FF.
This year we are 18-2 and who knows? Why would you say that we are going to get knocked out early?
I think alot of Bruins fans had expectations that were so high only an undefeated season would live up to expectations. We are 18-2 and have beat some pretty good teams not at full strength. If LRMB, Mata, and Roll can come back full strength by March and we continue winning at this pace we will be just fine. The sky isn't falling people.

And if you haven't noticed Howland has his teams peaking in March when they need to be.
I forgot to mention that Collison is starting to round back into true form. If he were this healthy against Texas we would have taken that game by double digits.

Agree with ASK, I think we beat Texas with Collison as he is right now. A little worried that Luc couldn't come back this past game. Any updates? We need some big bodies!

Why does UNC keep taking away players UCLA is also recruiting? Look on scout.com. 3 of their 4 commits for 2009 also were recruited by UCLA. To top it off, 2 have ALREADY committed for 2010. Argh!

To the above post. I think many recruits go to UNC instead of Ucla for three reasons mainly.
1. The East Coast Bias and higher publicity in that conference with Duke in it as well.
2. The high scoring and fast pace games of UNC means more points to pad the overrated score column.
3. Legacy of MJ.
Lots of young players focus more on offense so they like to showcase their strength which is offense. When you are going up and down the court fast its harder for your weak defense to be expose. This is why UNC nearly had 3 losses already in their season due to the close games where another team can score well too like Clemson and Purdue I think.
If you really want to see a school that recruits what UCLA recruits, look at USC really. Look at their offer list. When Ucla offers to one player, Usc almost always does as well and when Ucla doesnt, neither do Usc. Id say about 90% of the time that is the case. Look closely...

Bottom line is that the most prestigious/elite programs all recruit from the same talent pool. These schools are Duke, UNC, Arizona, UCLA, Kentucky, Kansas, UConn, etc. No school gets every player they want. The very top kids spread themselves out among the prestigious/elite schools and a few others like Texas, Georgetown, Michigan State, Ohio State, Memphis, L'ville etc.. When you look at the "final schools being considered lists" of the McDonald's All-Americans they all look very similar. Even though UNC got the Wear Twins in their 2009 class, don't forget that Love was down to UCLA and UNC when he picked UCLA. The Wear twins will prove not to be an important loss. They will not be impact players in the ACC, nor would they have been in the Pac-10. You win some recruiting battles and you lose some. Howland wins plenty of these battles. The key is that he really has So. Cal pretty well locked up and gets more than his fare share of the So. Cal kids he really wants, (Farmar, Afflalo, Shipp, Collison, Stanback, Westbrook, Holiday, Anderson, Lee, Kendall Williams...) He is also now able to go out of So Cal to get a few select players like Drew Gordon of San Jose and Reeves Nelson of Modesto, out of state like he did to get Love, and of course you can't complain about international players Aboya and M'bah a Moute. The next big prize is Renardo Sidney of Fairfax HS.

It seems like the most passionate posts are on the Recruit Round-Up articles. Wonder if that is a little of the coaching in all of us trying to help the Bruins pick and choose along the way.
For those who think our D has slacked lately, look at what our opponents are trying to do offensively. They are spreading the court so we can't effectly use our double team and then slide back to our man.
It will now be up to Coach Howland to see how he counters punches what our opponents have now thrown back at us.
Cannot anyone deny though, how great of defense D.C. played against the Beavers? I know it was Oregon State, but his overall game was just "magical" to watch!
Let's root for the Bruin "jelling" period to begin to take shape from here on out!

Brendan Lane is good.I went to all his games last year and he's quick for a 6-foot ten guy.
