Collison To Miss Games Next Week In CBE Classic

UCLA Head Coach Ben Howland announced during the CBE Classic media conference today that junior point-guard Darren Collison will not play in the tournament next week in Kansas City, Missouri.
Previously, it was thought Collison would practice as soon as Friday with a decision to play made afterwards, but with Collison still experiencing soreness in the knee and after being examined by physicians, the team decided to err on the side of caution and hold him out of the games next week.
Collison sprained his left knee on the first play of an exhibition game against Azusa Pacific. At the time, the injury was thought to be more serious but an MRI taken the following day revealed only a sprain.
Sophomore Russell Westbrook will start in place of Collison against Maryland in one of the CBE Classic semifinal games on Monday. If the Bruins beat the Terrapins then they will play on Tuesday against the winner of the Michigan State/Missouri semifinal contest.
Westbrook is the team's third leading scorer, averaging 11.0 points and 6.7 assists a game on 52.4% shooting. He is also averaging 1.7 steals but has also turned the ball over 3.3 times a game.

If we can handle both Maryland and Michigan St. without Collison, it says a lot about this team.

What... that UCLA can beat average teams? They already are doing that. Don't see much of a change here. These are definetly not the Maryland and M.St. teams of years past.
What are you talking about?
Mich State is ranked #12
Mich St. is ranked #12 but your right they are deffinetly a average team???
If we can perform at this high level without Collison, we're hands down the best team in the country with him.
They may be #12 but they loss their first exhibition game to Grand Valley! Ouch!

Collison out 10 more days.
Collison and Roll are slated to return in time for the George Washington game on Dec 2.
Interesting theory except they are playing Texas on Dec. 2. GW on 11/28.
I'll be curious to see how the Bruins respond away from Pauley. Lucky for us, UCLA gets to play either at home or a neutral site until 12-22-07. Then they play Michigan in Ann Arbor. We should be back to full-strength then and should win that game, but I always like to see how the Bruins fare on their first couple of hostile-crowd road games. They did have their share of tough games when playing on the weekend in the Eastern time zone last year. Curious to know if you guys feel confident they will be unbeaten up to that point? I sure hope so as that will be a good measuring tool in determining their progress.
We didn't look good traveling to West Virginia last year, you're right. I think we're going to have some close games with Davidson and Texas...you never know what's going to happen. Going undefeated is near impossible considering the parity in college -- we'll definitely lose at least a few in pac-10 play.
