Pauley Pavilion Architect Chosen For Renovation

By Bruin Basketball Report

UCLA has selected HOK Sport, from among ten other firms, as the architectural firm to prepare preliminary renovation and
expansion designs for Pauley Pavilion.

HOK Sport, based in Kansas City, MO, has designed a number of award-winning sports venues including; Camden Yards in Baltimore, MD; Coors Field in Denver, CO; AT&T Park in San Francisco, CA; and Hong Kong Sports Stadium.

As for college basketball arenas, HOK was responsible for Wichita State's Charles Koch Arena and University of Missouri's Mizzou Arena.

"HOK has designed some of the finest sports venues in the
industry and is noted as being one of the best in the business," said
UCLA Director of Athletics Dan Guerrero. "We are very pleased to have
taken the next step in the renovation of Pauley Pavilion and eagerly
await HOK's pre-design plan."

Enhancements to Pauley Pavilion currently under consideration include; a new retractable
seating system to bring spectators closer to the court, new
concession areas and restrooms; new and expanded locker rooms, dedicated practice facilities, modern arena technology to enhance fan experience, medical treatment and media rooms, and a main lobby to serve as a central entrance and to celebrate UCLA's illustrious athletic
tradition.  A development of the area between Spaulding Field and
the arena is also planned.

The goal is to dedicate the restored Pauley Pavilion on October 14,
2010, to honor Coach John Wooden on his 100th birthday.

I am all for the renovation, but am suspicious of the enhancing media for fan involvment. Please, do not let them add technological distractions (ie flashing screens and advertisements).

I don't mind the enhanced media as long as it doesn't get out of hand. It needs to be done with class.
For example,I hate NBA openings, fireworks, smoke...I laughed when Mater Dei shut the lights out when they announced their players at the opening..

I think Paige Sports Arena isn't called that anymore (remember her cheating scandal over at JustSC?). I think it's just Mizzou Arena.

Steve,
You're absolutely right. Thanks for the note.
The University of Missouri is removing the name of a 22-year-old Wal-Mart heiress from its brand-new sports arena, a week after she was accused of cheating her way through college

The renovations are long overdue. The amount of room for the concession lines is much too small. And I've seen too many people slip and fall on the stairs because they're too narrow, there's no color contrast to let you know where a step ends, and there are no handrails to grab onto. My mother-in-law, who has had season tickets to Pauley since it opened, rarely attends games anymore because she's afraid of falling on the steps. Which, in a sense, is kind of a good thing, because now she gives us her tickets.

Well we have taken a big step.It is soooooo long overdue. The current players should all be gone, unless of an injury or redshirt by any current freshman.Of Kevin and Chase coming in 07,I suspect only Chase will be around. The 08,09,and 10 class will be the recipients of huge changes that will be occurring.Ben will not be going anywhere, especially with this finally becoming official.
Having it ready for JRW's 100th birthday will be special God Willing. I do hope that the seating is the way it should have been from the beginning. Very close up and set up to have the students and rabid on your feet BRUINS surrounding the court. I have watched enough basketball to know the impact that so many arenas around the country can have on the atmosphere.
It will also be a super recruiting tool to cap off an already elite team,Coach, and future championship caliber teams. Right now it becomes something else to tell the Babbitt's,Gordon's,Jrue<though I do not currently see him playing college ball in the fall of 2010.
Now Malcolm and Jerime can be excited. Come on down Wear Twins etal.
I wonder if it will be done in phases so earlier classes will benfit.
