Some of the best high school basketball teams in the nation are set to meet for the first national event sponsored by the National Federation of State High School Associations, the NCAA of prep athletics. Participants in the boys tournament:
Fairfax (Los Angeles): 6-8 forward Chace Stanback, rated a top-100 player by website scout.com, says he'll play for UCLA. USA Today 9/12

Kevin Love, a UCLA recruit from Lake Oswego, Ore., rated the nation's second-best high-school senior boys basketball player by Sports Illustrated, will return to Bellevue for the Les Schwab Hoop Challenge on Dec. 9. Lake Oswego will play Franklin of Seattle in a 5 p.m. matchup of last year's Oregon and Washington big-school boys state champions. Seattle Times 9/13

Recruits

Anthony Randolph, a 6-foot-10 senior forward from Dallas, will make an official recruiting trip to Kansas for the Oct. 13 Late Night in the Phog. He will be joined by 6-8 senior Kyle Singler of South Medford, Ore., and Cole Aldrich, 6-11 from Bloomington, Minn. Aldrich has already committed to KU. Lawrence Journal-World 9/13

Kyle Singler's father, Ed, said via e-mail that his son has eliminated Washington, despite a respect for Huskies coach Lorenzo Romar, and also might take an official visit to UCLA. "Kyle would not be taking this visit if he were not interested in Arizona," Ed Singler said via e-mail. "He has never been on campus, so he felt it was important to see, firsthand, what it was like. Kyle is very aware of the basketball excellence and tradition of Arizona." Singler's coach at South Medford High School, Dennis Murphy, said Arizona was among the earliest schools to recruit him. "They got into him a long time ago," Murphy said. "I know he has a great respect for coach Olson and the things he's done." Arizona Daily Star 9/14

Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski was scheduled to visit Kyle Singler at his home in Oregon last night, and the recruit will visit Duke September 22-23. The Blue Devils are competing for Singler's services with Kansas, Washington, UCLA and Arizona. He has already visited UCLA and Washington and will travel to Arizona next week and Kansas in mid-October. "The behind-the-scenes chatter for the last few months is clearly that people feel that the pendulum has swung toward Duke, and that they're the team that has to be beat to get him," Telep said. If Singler decides to play his collegiate career at Cameron, he will join small forward Taylor King from California and point guard Nolan Smith of Virginia, both scout.com four-star recruits that have already committed to Duke. Kyle Singler, a 6-foot-8 forward from Oregon and the No. 1 small forward in the 2007 class, according to the recruiting Web site Rivals.com, and Solomon Alabi, a 7-foot-1 center from Montverde, Fla., ranked No. 24 overall (No. 4 among centers), will arrive in Tucson today....A good friend of UCLA's top recruit Kevin Love, with whom Singler has played AAU since junior high school, the 210-pounder may be influenced to go to Westwood, but the recruiting war appears to still be up for grabs. Kyle Singler appears to be a longshot—Duke is believed to be a leader and Singler is also planning a visit to Kansas’ midnight-madness festivities—but the fact that he’s taking a look here can’t hurt UA. The Wildcats are the only team he’s considering that will allow him to play regularly in his home state of Oregon. Arizona Daily Star 9/15

Faces in the crowd: Coveted basketball recruit Kyle Singler of Medford, Ore., was standing in the front row, behind the UA bench, accompanied alternately by Chase Budinger and, ahem, some UA coeds. Two prospects from the Far West, Darnell Gant and Ramon Harris, made official visits to UK this weekend. Gant is a 6-foot-8 forward from Los Angeles. A longtime basketball observer, sportswriter Frank Burlison of the Long Beach (Calif.) Press Telegram, said that Gant was considered among the top dozen prospects in the West....Oettinger projected Gant as a top-50 prospect. "I can see why Kentucky would recruit this kid," the analyst said. "He's a good player who's got a lot of potential." UCLA only ended its recruitment of Gant after getting a commitment from top-10 prospect Kevin Love. Lexington Herald-Leader 9/17
