Mata To Undergo Knee Surgery

Lorenzo Mata will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right knee when the current school session ends in June, and is expected to be held out of basketball-related activities for at least a month.Mata had been complaining about right knee soreness and it is the same knee he injured against Washington St. in January, but the injuries are reportedly not related.
In the game against the Cougars, Mata collided with guard Jordan Farmar in the second half and sufferred a non-displaced right tibial plateau fracture of the right knee.
Although Mata had not been expected to return from the injury until the following season, he made remarkable progress during his rehabilitation and helped the Bruins towards their march to the NCAA championship final game.
Mata, who will be a junior next season, will compete for the starting center spot in the fall. He averaged 3.6 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks while playing 14 minutes a contest in 21 games last season.

If you look at the roster, there aren't point guards listed as a position so I guess Howland will find one in Nican Robinson, Joey Ellis and/or DeAndre Robinson. Maybe Howland will get a transfer or a late sign for PG?
We're waiting for Farmar to make his decision official, which should be soon, before writing about who might replace him.
However at this point, besides Darren Collison, the Bruins will only have one pure PG on their roster for the 06-07 season - he is walk-on recruit Mustafa Abdul-Hamid, a 6'2, 180 player from STL. Howland found him at last year's UCLA summer camp and is rather high on him.
Besides Abdul-Hamid the Bruins have Leuzinger's Russell Westbrook, a 6'3 combo-guard, coming in next year. Westbrook can certainly handle the play-making duties part-time but he will need to cut down on his turnovers.
Whether Farmar leaves or not, the PG spot at UCLA will be in good shape, although obviously the Bruins would be much better if he stayed. Stay tuned.
